Q:Which is better, the one with paddle switch or the sliding switch?
by|Jun 11, 2023

Answer This Question

A:  Personally, the slide switch… otherwise you have to hold down the paddle switch down the entire time… even on bigger/longer jobs.

A:  I prefer the paddle. The grinder will stop spinning if gets ripped out of your hand while trying to cut something. The sliding switch will lock into the on position. Have you ever seen a grinder dancing around the ground at full speed? lol

Better grinders in similar price range
X-lock technology is why it's not a 5 star product. If you get this grinder, you'll be handicapped to choose from the few x-lock disc available. literally all available 5" accessories can't be used because makita wants you to pay for their overpriced/elusive disc's. it's a good grinder otherwise, it has brake, cuts pretty fast and is good looking, but Milwaukee /dewalt are objectively better choices. Those brands also have stronger batteries. Makita is my primary system, hate this though

This is a great angle grinder. Prior to this one, I have used my much older grinder and this one is a lot easier to insert and remove the disc. I love that this has a fuel gauge on the tool, but I do to the positioning of it, my wrist blocks the view. I would like to see this higher up near the handle. The light stayed on for about 45 seconds. The handle is very comfy. When you insert the disc, pull up the X Lock tab and push the cut off wheel or whatever you are using until it clicks then lower the tab. This does not have a variable speed, it has a power on lock which is good for using it for an extended period of time. It look about 3 seconds for it to come to a complete stop after shutting it off. I used this on an old piece of pipe that was crushed on one side. This comes with a cut off wheel and a grinding wheel Also it's 2021 , everything has an LED, I would like to see an LED so I can examine the work surface up closely in dark areas, without using an additional light.

Awesome Product! Got tired of dealing with my corded grinder and the cord getting in the way when working so went with the Makita and like their other tools it doesn’t disappoint. It’s easy to use, it has bobs of power/torque and it feels just as sturdy and high quality as a regular corded grinder. The X-Lock makes wheel changes a breeze (no tools required), the guard can be rotated without tools as well! Should have gotten one of these a long time ago...I already had a drill and impact wrench in 18v, so no I have another tool that will hopefully last as long. Did I say Great Product Yet!

Opening the box, this tool is heavy and solid, just the way I like my power tools. Please note that this item is TOOL ONLY, which means you have to obtain the battery and charger separately. Included are two wheels and two heavy duty safety guards. I got a little confused getting the wheels to lock in. I was looking for some levers on the side, when the instructions were referring to the obvious lever on the top. That figured out, I got this powerful tool working quickly. Of course, ALWAYS USE EYE PROTECTION WHEN USING TOOLS LIKE THIS.

I really love this tool. If you’ve ever hunted for the wrench and then monkeyed with the nut to change a wheel, you will immediately appreciate this X-lock. Unfortunately all my old discs are not compatible with this tool, but I am so happy with this I don’t care. The grinder has plenty of zip. With a 5 ah battery it feels pretty balanced. Another great thing about the X-lock is that you can’t put the disc in the wrong way. It is shaped so that it only fits in the correct orientation.

This is the first Makita tool I've ever owned, and I must say if they're all this good I will be buying more of them. This angle grinder is so well thought out compared to the cheap corded model I've owned for years. When you pick it up, you can feel how substantial it is, not to say it's heavy or anything, but that you feel like you're holding a very powerful tool, and it is. It is very well balanced and easy to hold. The handle can be unscrewed and moved to the other side if need be, the blades "click" into place using the lock latch on top of the tool. No more holding and unscrewing the nut that holds the blade in like other models. Changing the blade can't get much quicker. It comes with 2 different guard that easily lock in, and you can rotate the guard as need be just by pushing in a button. Very convenient! One guard encloses both sides of the blade on one end. I used it for the first time today. I had to modify a tool to fit my table saw blade removal nut. It was a little too narrow to fit, so I ground off a bit using the wider grinding wheel that comes with the tool. There is also a thinner cutting type wheel that comes with it. I'd say the only down point is that the blades are particular to this blade change system and you probably can't just use any generic cutoff wheel blade. But if they're that easy to swap out, I'm willing to deal with that. Note also that this is the TOOL ONLY and does not include a battery or charger. It's assumed like many other manufacturers that you already have one of their tools and you can share the battery from that.

I chose this grinder due to the x lock feature. I’ve always hated needing a separate tool to change wheels because it was always misplaced and slowed down work. After using this new x lock feature I can definitely say I’m hooked!!! The grinder itself is very comfortable to hold. The rubberized oversold on the body of the grinder as well as on the handle is very comfortable and provides great grip even when your hands are greasy. I used a 5ah battery and it was perfectly balanced, provided plenty of power to cut 1/4” angle iron and great run time. It’s not the power of a corded unit, but much more maneuverable without the cord. The biggest advantage of this grinder though is the x lock feature. Whelk changes are done in seconds!!! The guard also removes in seconds after the wheel is off so you can switch between the proper guard for your application. I would say the only drawback of the x lock is you have to buy x lock wheels that cost more as it won’t accept traditional round hole wheels, but I feel the convenience definitely outweighs the cost.

Really good quality grinder and Makita surprises me how they can get that much power out of an 18 V tool. The grinder has plenty of power the one I got is with the on and off switch. I used it to cut off some metal studs and it worked perfectly. Also sharpened some lawnmower blades and it did great without really losing any power but one feature I noticed and it’s actually pretty good is if I pushed pretty hard it has like an automatic shut off. But it takes a lot to get it to do that. So it only happened to me once but I was pushing it. It feels good in the hand and it has a nice solid handle attachment that goes right on for good control even to cope some baseboards. I really like how it’s simple to rotate the guard and it’s tool less. That feature is awesome because when I was cutting back some stucco on a property as I went up and down I had to adjust the guard. But my favorite feature is definitely this new X lock. I really do think this is the future of angle grinders with this feature. It is so much more convenient than tightening and removing or nut. It literally makes it so quick just by pulling the lever on the back of it and it pops off whatever wheel you were using. This is a huge timesaver especially remembering the times when I wasted so much time looking for a key when I couldn’t find one sometimes. It really is a good feeling knowing I don’t have to worry about losing the wheel removal key. The only maybe downside to this feature is getting the wheels you want as it is a new feature on the market so only a few are available right now. But I’m pretty sure more will be out soon. I wouldn’t be surprised if every company switches to something like this. Run time was great as it is brushless. I cut away stucco for a sliding door install and sharpened all my pry bars and still had two bars. I definitely give it two thumbs up. And it even fits a 5 inch wheel. To me it doesn’t even feel like it weighs any more than a corded. I would definitely recommend it to anyone especially a contractor who uses these a lot and wants to save a lot of time when they need to switch wheels.

Nicely balanced, well-behaved grinder with the convenient X-Lock quick change system. I'm a Makita fan and own quite a few tools and pieces of outdoor equipment, but this is the first angle grinder I've tried. It replaces an aging Bosch corded grinder, and it's more than a worthy replacement. I'm grinding out and sealing cracks on our concrete stoop, and matched with a diamond blade, this unit works like a charm and has more than enough power. It's got a soft-start feature, adjusts power to match load, and the AFT (Active Feedback-sensing Technology), which cuts the motor if the wheel binds, is a nice safety feature. Comes with guards for cutting or grinding that can mount with 360 deg. of articulation, and the side handle mounts left or right handed. It's on the heavy side for a grinder of this size, but it feels robust in my hand. The X-Lock system is a nice bonus -- you can mount a disk without even looking, because it will only engage one way, and the disk drops out cleanly when you pull the lock lever on the top. X-Lock compatible disks aren't too common yet (only Bosch, Makita, and Diablo make them, to my knowledge), but I suspect this system will become a new standard. It's a big step forward from the old screw-in blade system. All in all, highly recommended.

Excellent grinder with easy quick-connect system. This brushless LXT model packs a slew of features from soft start, to AFT (auto-stops of wheel gets stuck in something), to automatic speed/torque adjustment, and more. The most exciting feature by far is the X-Lock system, which makes wheel changes a breeze. Thrilled to see Makita introduce this quick system that was created by Bosch. It's so simple to attach and remove the wheel! Pull the X-Lock lever on top of the grinder to unlock. Set the wheel on the mount and press the wheel down and it clicks into place! No tools required and it takes just a few seconds! To remove the wheel, just pull the X-Lock lever to unlock again and the wheel falls right off. Because the lever must be pulled, it can’t accidentally unlock. There is one downside to having this amazing X-Lock. It can only use X-Lock wheels and currently just Bosch, Diablo and Makita make them, so, they're not as widely available or as frequently discounted. That said, I think this system is the future standard that many more brands will probably implement (like quick-release multi-tools and chuckless drills). This model has a sliding combo power/run switch on top; no paddle run switch. I like that I can turn it on, and it just runs without having to hold a paddle down, however the slider is not quite where any fingers are placed so uncomfortable to reach, and the lack of a simple paddle button to release to stop is less convenient. Frankly, each design has pros and cons so not a huge deal, but something to consider as Makita offers models with either switch option. The guards can be rotated without tools, but I found this to be rather difficult. You must press down hard to engage the turn. It runs smooth. I cut off a bunch of nails and ground away some rough edges from reclaimed lumber in no time. I was using a 5ah battery and it's a hefty tool! But the extra handle, which can be mounted on either side, helps. This is a powerful cordless grinder from a trusted brand, and the toolless X-Lock system makes it a joy to use. Highly recommend!
