can I use a 1/2 bit

Asked by: dave
If you’re referring to a 1/2” shank, no. And if you are referring to a 1/2” radius, I would not recommend it.

6.5 Amp 1-1/4 HP Corded Fixed Base Variable Speed Compact Router with Quick-Release is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 204.

I just purchased this router after owning the Ridgid router sold at the same price. Both routers have their pros and cons. This one is more powerful and seems to be built a bit better than the Ridgid. The plastic body of the Ridgid expands a bit when the motor heats up making depth adjustment more difficult so the aluminum body is a definite advantage for the Makita. The edge guide that comes with the Makita is pretty flimsy and seems a bit like an after thought. The Ridgid edge guard is outstanding, its a cast aluminum piece that mounts with thumb screws on to two steel shafts. It's easier to change your bit on the Makita because the base is easily removed, it is more difficult on the Ridgid because the spindle lock location does not allow for the base to be easily removed. Both are a good choice, if you are using the router more as a trim router than the Makita is the better choice, if you use the edge guide a lot like I do, the Ridgid is probably the better option. Either way you can't go wrong for $100

I use it for smaller jobs like cutting boards, etc. I had originally bought into the "lifetime" service brand at HD but after reading the details on "registering" the product and the service, I opted to return it. This unit has more power and is much quieter than the other brand. Fits great in the hand and is a joy to use. This router is a great addition to anyone's workshop!

The 2 wrench design is a very nice feature in addition to the spindle lock. I unpacked read the instructions and tested the variable speed dial and the motor and it runs very smooth and quiet with no router bit installed. The router body and grip is very comfortable and not too large to hold safely. The included straight guide is a great bonus and fits securely. I will order the dust guard and other accessories over time. I really like the Makita base diameter and optional accessories that can be used with it. The warranty is 1 year. I chose to add the 2 year home depot protection plan for another $12 and have the router brand and design I chose for my individual needs. After hours of reading recommended router bit speed charts and reading product reviews I wanted the best compact routing experience. I chose to return a single speed 7 amp 27000 rpm compact router with soft start and electronic feedback sealed in its box.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exquisite Tool Bought the other comparable router at the same price point first because it came with the carry bag and had the tempting service agreement. Should have known I was paying for those things because the actual tool quality was pretty run-of-the-mill. I returned it and bought this router. Don't be fooled by the similar reviews when doing your comparisons. This Makita is a fine, meticulously crafted tool with plastic and metal in all the right places. It routes beautifully, is easy to assemble/disassemble for bit and accessory swaps and the bits don't get heat-stuck (as was the case with the other router). Many add-ons are available for this as well for different applications. If a carry bag is a must i'd recommend searching the web and spending the extra $15 or so for a small Makita bag or just use a generic tote. It's worth it.

Used it first to shave down some 2x4s to make space for a few oak boards for a floor transition. Also made a little jig to shave down the edge of the last oak board, and to round over the corners and handles of a plywood box I made for my angle grinder. Light weight, easy to change bits, variable speed works well I have no complaints! This is my first router, and I'm thinking that I won't need another for a long time.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Buyer beware I was trying to decide between this router and the similarly priced Rigid (R24012). I went with the Makita because it had more options for using a plunge base and such, and my general familiarity with the brand. My first task for the router was removing 1/16th of an inch of plywood veneer on some drawers that I had made that were just slightly too tight for the cabinet they were going into. Unfortunately, I could not get the depth setting to stay put! I'm not complaining here about the precision of the adjustment, there is slop in the mechanism that lets the depth setting vary by more than a 1/16th. I could not find any way to "tighten" the depth setting mechanism. Of course I discovered this while removing my veneer and watching the depth go ever deeper - fortunately I was paying attention and was able to salvage the drawer, but I was lucky. If anyone knows something that I missed on this, I'd be happy to keep the router, but as it stands I'm returning it....

It is easy to control with the on/off switch placed in an area that is readily accessible while in use. There is more than enough ample power to use a wide range of bits and It sports a brand name that is tops among pros and handymen alike. But the most compelling point is the affordable price of the unit. This definitely should be in everyone's tool box.
