I got mine like that’s also. Mine had a little crack in it. I said f it what ever not like your losing money anyway. It was cheaper than just buying everything separately the case was just an added bonus.
My Makita 4 1/2 in Paddle Switch Grinder kit came with two guards. The standard 'Wheel Guard' surrounds the rear half of the grinding or cut-off wheels, and leaves the entire bottom of a wheel exposed. The 'Wheel Guard (For cut-off wheel)' surrounds the rear half of the grinding or cut-off wheels, and also covers the rear half of the bottom of the wheels. There can be some cutting and grinding tasks where the guard may interfere, and it can be removed. However, when this safety guard is removed you must be very careful to prevent personal injury.
For cutting/grinding the concrete sidewalk edge, there are two types of wheels that could do the job. There is a basic masonry/concrete grinding/cutoff wheel which come in various thicknesses (e.g., 1/8" and 1/4") and cost $3-$4 each. The thinner wheels cut faster but wear out quicker. The thicker wheels are more suited for grinding. Also, there are the diamond cup segmented grinding wheels that cost $30-$50. I have used many of the masonry cutoff wheels for cutting and grinding concrete. Personally, I have been happy with the Diablo brand although other brands are good as well. For sections of my concrete driveway that lifted up 1" and is 10ft wide I am planning on buying a diamond segmented grinding wheel. At homedepot.com just do a search for "concrete grinding wheel". For both types of wheels, there is a large selection available in-store and online. CAUTION: Safety goggle use is mandatory.
Use a metal cut off wheel. Don't try to use the grinding wheel.
I have never tried cutting, smoothing and polishing granite, which is a very hard stone. I have read that it is recommended you use a range of polishing wheels (disks) from 60 to 3000 grits, with the final 3000 grit providing a mirror like finish. These granite smoothing/polishing kits, that include diamond impregnated disks are available for angle grinders (variable speed). However, it appears 3000 rpm is recommended. My Makita 4 1/2" angle grinder operates at 11,000 rpm, although I wish it was variable speed. High speed, and non-water cooling could over heat the granite and possibly cause cracking. Therefore, high speed angle grinders (non-variable speed), would not be the right tools for smoothing and polishing granite.
This kit includes variety of cuttings wheels, an concrete diamond cutting wheel, multiple metal cutting wheels and a grinding metal wheel for buffing rough surfaces.
YES You will not run out of torque - improved trigger top tier brand / my pick best tool for any reasonable task. See You Tube for technique.
It is never recommended to use a wood cutting blade on a grinder.
