Highly recommended but must be adapted somehow
It wouldn't have killed Makita to include this as standard, and they could have engineered it to switch sides. It's a MUST for reducing shop mess. But connections are tricky. I first went with DaveRich's mod of a rubber sewer pipe cap for using a shop vac. Works beautifully. But for a larger job, I needed to hook up to my 4" system. I used a 3"-4" HVAC duct reducer taped onto the Makita chute, and inserted into a 4" pvc coupling that fits a 4" quick-connect that I switch between machines.

Fits the old 2012 planer perfectly
Since there is conflicting info all over the place I came here to confirm, with pictures, that it fits the older version perfectly. Just discard black metal piece and screw in. I’m not going to complain about the port size since the rest of the world uses the metric system except us. The outside diameter is actually 75mm. There are cheap solutions to this that are easy to find on other reviews on other sites

The collector fit well and works as expected. You have to be clever in making a connection to a 4" dust collector. I used a 6" section of thin-wall smooth irrigation pipe (which fits snug on the hose connector) to a 4" to 3" reducer (which fits snug to the planner hood). I filled the small gap with felt and sealed it with aluminum tape and screws. I added an s-hook to the end of the collector hose and used a bungee cord wrapped around the handles to the s-hook to take any weight off of the connection. Works like a charm and is easy to take on/off.

Adapter Bushing (vacuum hose to dust collector hood)
I bought the hood knowing there was some options for the mismatched size of the hood and standard 2-1/2" vacuum hoses. I found what I think is a better means to adapt the two - it looks like a factory connection and does not require taping, clamping, etc. The adapter is a rubber cap for sewer pipe, found in the plumbing department (made by 'PlumbQwik' Part No. PQC-102). Cost was $3.30. If you cut out a hole in the closed end to form a bushing, it fills the gap between the dust collector and the hose exactly. It allows for an air tight connection, flexibility in the fitting and you can barely even see it. See the photos for clarity. This really should be provided by Makita with the duct.

Gets rid of 95% of the dust.
Well, it directs the dust to the side as it should and I'm glad I got it. The only puzzling thing this the port size. It doesn't match any conventional dust removal system. Almost like Makita hired an engineer who's never done woodworking AND EVERYONE in the approval process has never done woodworking. So, as you can see in the photo, I found a dyer duct and used screw clamps. For the other end, I had an extra length of the Rigid shop vac connector tubes. I cut the end off, wrapped a shop towel around it and clamped it. So it works now. Fortunately I was able to find a solution quickly, but annoyed I had to spend extra money unnecessarily.
