Q:The vanity top has a backsplash. Shouldn't the length of the sidesplash be 21"?

A: Thank you for your interest! The sidesplash will be 21.75", the backsplash thickness is .75 inches and the vanity top depth is 22.5". With the sidesplash butting up to the backsplash (.75" + 21.75") the sidesplash will match the depth/length needed.
