Questions & Answers

Do you have to use the floor track or can you mount with just the upper track?

Asked by: Flyerfoot
No you don't have to use a floor track. Since my door was wide I felt better using one.

Is the door the same on both sides? Can a married be mounted on the back of door?
Asked by: Cindy
Cindy, Yes, you can mount a mirror on the back side of the door, if the thickness of the mirror is not so great that it drags on the wall. The door is solid enough to hold most fasteners. If you used the backer board at the top to mount the top rail, you will have approximately 1-1/2" gap from the door to the wall. If the doorway has trim around it, then you will have approximately 1" gap from the door to the wall. There are a lot mirrors that are thinner than 1". I have included a picture showing the gap. My door has trim around it, so it has a 1" gap. As other have said, both sides are identical. The warranty on the door will NOT be voided if you drill into it.

What type of hardware did you use to lock your door? You mention hardware, but not what type or where to find it. Thanks

Can I install the backing board with drywall anchors? I do not have the ability to install the rail assembly or backing board to into studs in any way.
Asked by: KevinM
I agree with the answers that were given. I didn't have studs where they were supposed to be so that is why I drilled my own holes in the bar in order to attach them to the wooden studs. Some people attached a wooden board the length of the bar which helped with the attachment. They painted the wooden board the same color as the wall so you don't notice it so much. Don't attach it to the dry wall with anchors, its not strong enough.

36 in. x 84 in. Melrose Solid Core Primed Composite Interior Barn Door Slab with Sliding Door Hardware Kit is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 82.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very disappointed Anchor system is made of plastic. It has a lot of give and the door sags. Door had damage done to it through box. During shipping there was a chip out of the door and had to be covered with caulk and then painted. The door stoppers also only mount in areas that are inconvenient and they don't install securely. The board that goes between the rail and the wall was extremely warped and crooked. All of these issues made what should have been a 30 minute install into 3 hours. I had a carpenter install it and he has installed over 20 barn style doors and he said this was the lowest quality door he has seen. Do not buy this door!!

The door is simple to install, even for those with average skills. The door (primed off-white/ cream), railing and rollers (brushed stainless) are of excellent quality and finish (5*). The reason for less than 5* is: the handle (if you use it) is poorly finished - you'll need a better quality one from HD; as others have said, the pre-drilled holes for the rollers are out of alignment and too far apart; two holes with thread are drilled in each end of the rail for joining rails I presume - would be nice if there were plugs to hide these holes if they're not used; the method of affixing to dry wall is not what any builder would recommend because the bolts retaining the rail (17" apart) do not align with to code stud centers - you'll be relying on the drywall to take the weight and good luck with that! These issues are easily fixed. Fix the backing board to studs with 3" screws (that you supply), then fix the rail to the backing board with supplied bolts - don't use the supplied plugs - that way the studs and backing board are taking the weight directly, not the drywall. The roller pre-drilled holes on top of the door, forget them, move the rollers 3/4" toward the leading and following edges of the door then drill your own holes to properly affix the rollers. The handle, well I threw the supplied one away and instead used 6" rectangular recessed sliding door handles in stainless steel (amazon) so there is a handle on each side, and the door can open fully beyond the doorway cavity. Finished job is excellent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent value BUT.. Ok so here's the thing. For the price, this door is solid, the hardware is solid, everything looks great and the door feels expensive. Heavy, smooth closing, aesthetically pleasing. From reading other reviews it's clear that they have changed up the contents of the box to include more hardware and a hard pine backer board to mount onto the drywall on the studs. But here's the thing: the instructions suck. That being said, get about 5 5/16 3" lag bolts and washers when you buy the door. Mark the 5 holes for the metal guide first, then the 5 holes where the wood will go into the studs itself. Bolt the wood board to the studs, then hammer in the included PLASTIC anchors, not the metal ones because they're garbage, add the metal spacers and the guide rod, and bolt the included bolts through into the anchors. that's all you need to know because the instructions don't tell you any of that. All in all, it's a good door for the price and you won't be disappointed.

I have been saving it to get it installed in my man cave. The door is a heavy solid core door. In my situation I had duct work above where I needed to install it but I was able to cut 4 inches off the bottom of the door to allow it to fit. The rail system slides nice and is made well. The door itself comes with different mounting options depending on what your wall is made out of (ie. concrete, drywall, wood, etc.). Once the rail system is installed securely and level, all you have to do is hang the door on the rail. The rail has adjustable stoppers that can be moved to suit your installation.

The anchors that came with the door were not the right fit, we had to buy separate achors to hold up the door, otherwise the door won't be secure. Also the bar at the top comes with the holes and it did not match where the frame of the door was, therefore a separate piece needed to be purchased. It only brings one handle!!! So, you are trapped on the side without a handle. So, while the door is beautiful, it has a lot of flaws. Unless, you are a master craftman, it may not be the door for you. Definitely not an easy install. Requires work.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Inexpensive Alternative to Reclaimed Wood This product is awesome! If you're looking for the barn door look, you know by now by the time you add up the cost of the door plus the hardware you are looking at $1,000. We remodeled our garage into a guest house with a loft/studio feel and wanted to do the project on a budget. A barn door to the bathroom was a must, and we lucked out finding this item at HD which gives you both the hardware and the door (primed and ready to paint) for 1/3 of the cost of the alternatives. It looks and functions great, the only drawback is there is no hardware for the inside/other side of the door but that's an easy fix.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Looks great... great price This door is a great option when/if you don't want to spend 2x to 3x the price! I installed this product as the door into my Master Bathroom - as there was no door before, just an opening. (Awkward!) I was able to install this door by myself over the course of a weekend... and would like to offer a few notes on installation: 1) The recommended drill bit for the pilot holes in the ledger/backer board is WAY TOO BIG. The installation instructions call for a 5/16 bit... but this results in a hole that is outsized for the actual bolts used to mount the track to the ledger board. I drilled the pilot holes with the prescribed bit size, and ended up having to patch those holes, and drill much smaller pilot holes about 1 inch over. (It ended up working out fine - and the patched holes are barely visible - but it was annoying.) 2) The recommended drill bit for the pilot holes to attach the rolling hardware to the door is WAY TOO SMALL. Again, not a big deal, but annoying. 3) When you attach the door stoppers to the track, it is likely one may need to be on the *outside* of the first bolt hole on the track (install instructions say to install both on the inside of the first bolt hole). Measure first to determine if you need to place a stopper inside or outside the bolt. (I initially placed both inside, then had to unbolt the track attachment on one side to move one of the stoppers). 4) I didn't like the included handle... it is easy enough to upgrade to something else... which I did. 5) This door is super heavy... I installed it by myself, but it would have been helpful to have assistance when attaching to door to the track. 6) SPEND TIME MAKING/TAKING ACCURATE MEASUREMENTS. I found the measurements provided with the installation instructions (on how high to hang the track) to be accurate. I followed those instructions specifically, and was pleased with the result. 7) You will be painting this door. The primer color is a bit dingy. But, the door takes paint really well, and this shouldn't be an issue. All in all, a great product... and I would recommend it highly.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice looking door-missing hardware We have purchased 2 of these doors. Love the way they look. With the first door the handle was not included -even tho it is listed with the parts. With the other door the little plugs for the ends of the track weren't included - even tho these too are listed with the parts. All in all, i believe this company either has packaging issues or is lacking a quality control dept.
