Questions & Answers

Just installed. Outside temp 82F. Attic temp around 100F. Fan does not turn on till thermostat is set to 80 or below Why

Asked by: PEKO
Try leaving at just under 100 for a bit to see if it kicks on. If not then the dial may not have been correctly zeroed at assembly. I usually keep the thermostat at around 110 so the fans not running all summer

I have installed a new roof and the fans came as well. One fan runs almost constantly and the electrician says they are set at 110. Can this be from moisture? There is no humidistat, but i do live in the NE so it's been cold and damp for weeks.
Asked by: cdl
Our thermostats are designed to operate until they reach a set temperature. If you set your desired setting 105 degrees F (recommended), the fan will operate until the temperature in your attic is 5-7 degrees below the device setting (98-100) before shutting off. If the temperature is set to lo (70-80 degrees) it may never turn off depending on the outside temperature being pulled in the attic. If the air temperature is 75-80 degrees during the summer months, the lower setting my no be achieved and the fan will continue to operate.

I am replacing two existing, but not working, vents. My house is single story 2200 sq ft. Will there be any problems with over capacity in terms of max cfm?
Asked by: mikec
I think from your description that you plan to install two fans. the combined CFM would be 2500 CFM but the kicker is how much eave vent area do you have to replace the air being removed from the attic. If you don't have enough vent area to replace the air the fan is trying to remove you will be placing a burden on the fans and making them work harder and possibly wear them out sooner. They make lesser CFM fans that you may want to consider.

It is keeping our house much cooler on these hot summer days and increased our air flow in our attic to help prevent mold. It has a thermostat which I set at 75 degrees and when the attic exceeds this temp, it kicks on and removes the built up heat

My main objectives in selecting a fan were - run quietly - built in thermostat - not leak or allow rodents or birds to get into attic I was able to install this in my roof/attic myself. By far the toughest part of the installation is running electrical to this inside your attic. I'm about to re-roof my house so I didn't have to worry about refitting the shingles around it or sealing it. One installed and wired up, I flipped on the breaker and was disappointed to see and hear that my attic fan had a pretty bad vibration. From inside the house it sounded like a helicopter off in the distance, only it stays constant. That is really annoying! It makes me think that the manufacturer doesn't test these as they come off the assembly line. Bad QA. Rather than uninstalling it and dealing with taking it back and then risking having the replacement unit be just as bad, I ended up balancing the fan myself. To do this, turn off power to the fan, pop the dome off (4 bolts), and drill a small (like 1/8") hole in the approximate center of each of the 5 fan blades. Then screw a sheet metal screw (I used 1/2" panhead) into one of the holes and turn on power. If the wobble is worse, remove the screw and try in the adjacent blade until you get the least vibration. You can try larger or smaller screw in that blade to fine tune. It took three tries and only about 20 min to solve the vibration problem, which ended up being less headache than pulling the fan down. Now that the vibration issue is fixed, the fan is super quiet when it is running and I'm very happy with the final result, but can't help but be disappointed that the initial quality isn't there.
