You don't want to run this in winter. It's for venting heat and humidity from the attc in summer. We turn ours off when it gets cool probably early/mid-October and don't turn it on again until probably late May in the St Louis area.
You DO want to run this with a combo thermostat/humidistat. During winter it'll vent moisture/humidity that occurs, preventing any ice buildup on the underside of roof sheathing and helps reduce ice dams from freeze/thaw when sun comes out in the winter.
The fan circulates the moist air out, helping to prevent frost inside the attic and ice dams.
