No because zinc iz poisonous to algae, moss, lichen, fungus, mold. So when rain rolls over the metal, and tiny metal particles are carried down the roof which begin killing algae, moss, lichen, fungus, mold.

INSTALLING ZINC STRIP MOSS AND MILDEW PREVENTER How zinc strip works. Zinc strip does not kill moss or mildew, it inhibits their growth so that in most cases roof cleaning is reduced or eliminated. The zinc strip is installed along both sides of the ridge of the roof, so that most of the strip is exposed. The exposed zinc will oxidize, forming zinc oxide. Every time it rains, some of this zinc oxide leaches down the roof, inhibiting the growth of moss and mildew. Very large roofs may require extra protection. If the roof extends for more than 14 feet, down from the ridge where the zinc strip is installed, regrowth may reoccur. In these cases installing a second zinc strip about halfway down the slope may be required. The roof must be cleaned of moss and/or mildew. Zinc strip will help control the growth of moss and mildew, it will not remove growth that is already there. Zinc strip can be used on composition shingles, wood shakes, and tile roofs. Note however, that it is not as effective when used on barrel tile type roofs as the fungus inhibiting action remains mainly in the valleys of the tiles. Only areas below the strip will receive protection. On hip roofs, this means that for full coverage, each side of each hip needs to have zinc strip applied. If regrowth is a continuing problem, it may indicate another problem, such as inadequate attic ventilation, which is supplying moisture that encourages mildew or moss growth. COMPOSITION AND WOOD SHAKES 1. Install zinc strip on both sides of the ridge 2. Install under the cap shingle on both sides of the ridge. Do not insert more than 1” under shingles. 3. Use roofing nails with neoprene washers, spaced 12” apart. Nails are best located under the covering shingle. 4. If you prefer, the zinc strip can be glued, using a high grade, exterior construction adhesive. TILE ROOFS 1. Unless you are installing the ridge tile at the same time, you will probably find it easiest to glue the zinc strip to the tile. Use a high grade, exterior, construction adhesive. 2. Glue the strips on both sides of the ridge. 3. Bend the strips as necessary to conform to the shape of the tiles. 4. For ease of handling, the strips can be cut into 6’ or 8’ foot lengths and butted together. 5. Not as effective when used on barrel tile type roofs. The fungus inhibiting action remains mainly in the valleys of the tiles. Should you have any further questions, Please do not hesitate to contact Masterflow Technical Support at 1-800-211-9612.

Installed under the ridge tiles on moss covered barn roof. It appears to have an immediate effect on eliminating the moss growth, but will have to have more rainy days to determine the total benefits. It's alot easier than trying to balance some 5 gals buckets of bleach on the roof ridge.
