What are the exact dimensions (w x h x d) of the compartment/interior? Can it fits a fob key & a standard key?
A fob won't fit. Just keys on a simple ring is all it holds. I have 3 keys in mine.
This particular Master Lock is only meant to hold a couple of spare keys and not key fobs. Home Depot does have several other lockbox models to choose from that are larger and will accommodate a key fob.
Does the lock code need to be on the code to use the lever to release the shackle? I have tried for 2 days to get this off the door knob with no success.
To hang the lock box: 1. Open the compartment door with the combination 2. Push the shackle release lever (inside compartment) to the right and hold. Pull the shackle up and out of the lock. 3. Place shackle around door knob or other object. 4. Close shackle to lock. 5. Close the compartment door. 6. Scramble the combination dials to lock the door and conceal your combination 7. Close the dial cover
Yes. You need to open it to access the release lever of the shackle which is visible only once you open the compartment after entering the code. The default code is 000. You can change it to whatever you like.
The lock code is only utilized to open the panel to access the spare key inside. The lever that allows you to release the shackle is located within the inside of this panel at dead center. The lever has two positions. To the left is the shackle latched position. Sliding the lever to the right allows the shackle to be opened so that you may relocate the Master Lock to another location. Just slide the lever back to the left when re-latching the shackle.
How do you remove the unit from the door knob?
Quite simple. There is a flip lever inside the box which you just actuate to release the shackle.
You use your combination and open the lock.

Not waterproof. Easy to use and not too bulky.
This Master Lock is not 100% waterproof, but is very weather tight. Meaning it is meant to be able to be located outside and rained or snowed on, just not submerged.
It has a little plastic cover for the combination wheels but the rest of the lock doesn’t seem waterproof. I would call it water resistant at best. I installed mine where it was somewhat protected from rain.

Yes, this Master Lock fits around a standard door knob.
The shackle is 1-13/32in tall by 1-7/8in wide. This will fit on most standard door knobs. Please measure to verify that it will fit for your application.

Yes, but the lock button on the doorknob inside of the door is difficult to rotate because of the weight of the lockbox on the other side, apparently.
How do you reset the code?
To open the portable lock box: 1. Open dial cover to reveal the dials. 2. Rotate dials to the current combination (if the lock is new, the combination is set to open at 0-0-0). 3. Push on door to release. 4. Pull the door fully open. 5. Add or remove keys. 6. Close compartment door. Push and hold door while turning dials to scramble combination. 7. Scramble the combination dials to lock the door and conceal your combination. 8. Close the dial cover. To set your own combination: This lock is preset to open at 0-0-0. 1. Open the compartment door (see instructions above). 2. Push the reset lever left and pull forward. The lever remains in this position. It will make a click when it is engaged. 3. Rotate dials to your desired combination. 4. Push the reset lever back, it will spring back into the original position. 5. Close the key storage compartment door. 6. Scramble the combination dials to lock the door and conceal your combination. 7. Close the dial cover.
follow the instructions to the letter, and hope to get lucky
Upon using your present code to open up the panel, you will notice a lever in the center of the compartment. The lever is in the left position. With the code unchanged slide the lever to the right. Then change the three digit number code to whatever new number you would like. Then slide the lever back to it’s original position and your new code will be stored until you decide to change it again. Very easy to do, just takes seconds to accomplish.
Can this or any of these lock boxes be used as padlocks as well as key keepers to keep people from know what it is?
Yes I had to cut off the rubber sheath that goes around a doorknob to get it to go through the hole on the gate. Just looks like a big padlock on the gate.
Yes. It unlocks and locks like a standard combination lock and can fit a gate, locker, etc. It is bigger than a standard lock which may stand out, but it can be used as a padlock too.
