Answer

While this thermometer is optimized for grilling and smoking, it does sport an impressive operating range of 32°F to 662°F (0°C to 350°C) and could be used to measure the temperatures of non-food (like soil!) within this range as well.

The HD-32 has a range of 300 ft (90 meters) in ideal conditions. Obstructions such as walls and doors can reduce this range.

The tip of the probe should be positioned so that it is inserted into the thickest part of the meat you are cooking and centered as much as possible. Make sure it is not touching bone or inserted into a fatty area as this can cause inaccuracy to the detected temperature.

Handy, accurate, necessary,
I haven’t had a bad steak or under cooked ribs since I started using this thermometer this past spring. It is very accurate and the preset temps will get you the desired level of doneness every time. The sensor is very easy to use and takes a little learning to get it inserted in the meat for accurate readings. The remote is very easy to use and set up and it has excellent range. Probably the only con I can see is the remote uses the two AAA batteries up quickly, should have at least two AA Batteries.

Made cooking pulled pork easy! Product worked well with only one flaw, the thermometer losses connection to the hand held after about two hours. It’s probably to make sure you didn’t leave it on by accident. But when you cook for twelve hours it gets annoying!

Poor Quality Display
I bought this unit to remotely monitor temperature of my gas grill. Unfortunately, the LCD and backlit display is very poorly designed making it nearly impossible to read when viewing slightly off angle. The display is also washed out under normal sunlight. This would have been a nice device if not for the poor display which can't be adjusted basically rendering this unit worthless. I'm returning it tomorrow.

Handy little thing...my gripe with grilling was the constant demand on your time to do it right...this past Christmas...we got a new Traeger Smoker and my wife's promise that she was providing me a "Fix It and Forget It" option. Worked like a charm...probe in the meat - heat proof wire out the smoke hole in our smoker lid to monitoring device for temp...I had the remote next to wine glass in front of fire with friends and family....when temp ws correct for what I set it at...I got notified... If you could buy an automatic baster...I would get that also...

Biggest Piece of Junk ever
Bought this thinking it would be great to smoke with but as it turns out it completely destroyed my brisket not only once but twice. I trusted the thermometer to let me know when the meat was done but it was not the correct temperature. The first one I bought displayed incorrect temperature so I took it back and got another one only to destroy another brisket because it would say 210F when it was only 80F. do not buy one. bad quality twice now. see the photos. over 200F at room temperature. junk

I love this thing!
I love this thermometer!!! No more running back and forth to the smoker, I only need to tend to it when it actually needs it!! Set up was simple, in just a few minutes it was up and running. I checked the accuracy with my digital thermometer and its spot on! I have nothing bad to say about this device....and I'll not be without one again! Every smoker fan needs one of these!!

Accurate Basic Thermometer
I was very wary of trying this unit because of the few early reviews describing it as inaccurate and unreliable. The first several times I used it I was very wary of its readings and verified frequently with other thermometers, which turned out to be completely unnecessary. Every reading from beginning to end has been spot-on with every meat I've smoked or grilled, and I am finally able to enjoy the freedom of knowing exactly how my BBQ is progressing the entire time from anywhere inside my house. The biggest drawback of this model is that it does not have any option to add a second probe. If you want to monitor the ambient temperature or a second cut of meat, you will need a separate thermometer. However if you already have a reliable way to monitor the temperature inside your grill or smoker, this is a great addition. The one other shortcoming is the sensitivity to water for both the probe and the transmitter. A pop up storm during a 15 hour smoke left me out in the rain scrambling to protect the thermometer, but now I am better prepared to deal with that the next time. Cleaning the probe is a bit of a chore without being able to wash it in the sink with everything else, but nothing too difficult to handle. I am worried that the wire seems to be getting brittle after a few dozen hours in the smoker, but so far it does not seem to be hindering its performance or accuracy. Overall, this is a fairly basic thermometer that alone will probably not satisfy the temperature monitoring needs of a serious enthusiast. But this is perfect for the occasional BBQ or casual griller, and would be a great addition to the toolkit of any pro or enthusiast. And there is definitely no reason to question the accuracy of its readings so long as it is used and cared for properly.

Great For Brick Oven
I found this thermometer a joy to use and saved me many trips thru the backyard to the brick oven. I often cook turkeys, prime ribs and such in my brick oven. Normally I would go out every 20 ,minutes or so and check the temperature with a regular meat thermometer,. With this device I can just put the probe in the meat. and close the oven door not having to open it again till its done. saving me time and cooking heat from not opening the door and letting the retained heat out. I can either look at the temperature from the oven or just lay on the couch and check the remote. This is a godsend and will get much use around here.

ON THE MARK
TRYING OUT THE DIGITAL THERMOMETER I DECIDED TO COOK A 3 LB ROAST, ALTHOUGH THE UNIT WILL AUTOMATICALLY SET THE TEMP FOR BEEF AT- RARE 125F, MED. RARE 140F, MEDIUM 150F, MED. WELL 160F, WELL-DONE 165F. MANUALLY YOU CAN ALSO SET YOUR OWN PREFERRED TEMPERATURE FROM 16-F TO 482-F. I SET MY TEMP AT 115F ( RARE ) THE BACKGROUND LIGHT FLASHES GREEN WHEN 10-15 % BEFORE CONTROLLED TEMP IS REACHED,- THEN FLASHES RED WHEN DONE. WHEN IT ARRIVED AT 115 %, I CHANGED THE TEMP TO 120 %. I FOUND THAT I RECEIVED ACCURATE READINGS EVEN THOUGH I WAS 100 FEET AWAY AND INSIDE MY HOUSE IN MY LIVING ROOM, WHICH IS LOCATED IN FRONT OF HOUSE, WHILE BBQ IS IN REAR OF HOUSE. THIS UNIT WORKS AS ADVERTIZED. I FOUND I HAD TO PUT THE SENDER UNDER BBQ ON A BUCKET TO KEEP IT OUT OF THE FLORIDA SUN WAS ALMOST 100 %, UNIT STARTED SHOW SMUDGE READING, THEN IT WAS FINE. IF YOU DON’T WANT TO RUN BACK AND FORTH TO BBQ, YOU CAN TRUST THE ACCURACY OF THIS PRODUCT.
