Express Yourself

Products that turn ideas into expressions of you.

Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) is an engineered wood product and one of the most versatile DIY and building materials available on the market today. It’s attractive appearance, smooth feel and consistent surface makes it ideal for (non-aerosol) painted applications, shelving and storage cabinets. MDF offers the perfect surface for veneer applications as well. MDF is not recommended for applications where excessive moisture or humidity are present. When working with and cutting MDF, work outside and wear a particle mask, as MDF produces a fine-powdered, airborne dust. California residents: See Proposition 65

That would work just fine, KP. Hope your toddler loves it. There should be no problem with flaking.

Need a cover for my trunk would this be good to use to make one ?

Asked by Racer March 26, 2021

Answer

Hi Racer, If we understand you correctly, you have an old trunk with a cover that is no longer serviceable, and you wish to replace it with something else that will be covered with carpeting. MDF should do the job, but 3/4 in. plywood would also work. Best of luck to you with this project.

can I use this as underlayment

Asked by FRANK January 21, 2021

Answer

FRANK, If you would scroll about a fifth of the way down on your product page, you will see a listing of various board types and their recommended uses. We do not see MDF suggested for this sort of use. If you are still considering it for this purpose, please note that this product is not waterproof, so for long-life, avoid getting the panels wet- from a leak or spill. While this MDF is a quality product, it is not recommended for your desired use. We would recommend an underlayment, OSB, BCX ply, or attic decking.

Is it suited for outdoor use

Asked by Joe November 25, 2020

Answers

Not for outdoor use. It is sawdust that is compressed with glues added ,it is not water resistant at all! You can coat with poly clear and that will help but will not make it waterproof. I use it on automotive interior panels but I always coat all sides of panel with semi gloss poly clear. Very light costs , or you can raise the grain to the point of ruining the panel of it will crumble!!

could this be good to use for Shiplap?

Depends on whether you want it outside or inside. It is not suitable for outdoor use. Inside, it requires painting and does not provide a good painting surface like plywood or other real wood product.

Excellent and less expensive alternative to plywood. It is great for work bench tops, cabinetry simply because the surface is a lot finer, the material is more dense making precision cuts easier to maintain. No good around water so I treat my work with any kind of oil so that water is always repelled.

I had a plumbing leak in the garage where the flexible pipe comes out of the main. To get to it the plumber ripped up the drywall bad. After, he said he wouldn't put the drywall back in case anything else broke later. So I got this wood. It worked well to cover up the area in a way to get back and also look streamlined. I also wanted it to go lower than the drywall to the floor so it needed to be a little flexible. It worked great.
