Questions & Answers

Confused about this model 5616-24 kit and the H-D description; why are there inconsistencies?

The description mentions a 1-3/4 hp and a 2-1/4 hp motor. Is it the 2-1/4 hp model? The description also mentions that there is no variable speed; however, "EVS" is variable speed. Does this model have a collet lock or does it require two wrenches?
Asked by: jimpg
The 5616-24 kit includes the 5616-20 router which is 2-1/4 HP, variable speed, comes with 2 wrenches, and requires both.

Does the micro-depth adjustment knob work on the plunge base or only the fixed base?

Asked by: Josh
Josh it does work on both. You can fine tune the depth in the fixed base which adjust the motor in the base. In the plunge base application it only adjusts the stop rod. What i have done for lets say making a sign. I'll do a quick pass on a letter check the depth and if need to be deeper I'll undo the stop rod lock knob with the adjustment knob I'll fine tune the cut. Or with the bit in the motor push the base down till the bit just kisses the work surface release the plunge lock lever, lock the stop rod in place use the 3" steel measure plate on the base to set the movable pointer and use the adjusting knob to set the depth desired. You can use the LDA, Linear Depth Adjustment in both bases.

I was looking at 2 other brands and chose this Milwaukee for a few reasons. 1. The body grip. I use a trim router often and just by habit grab the router this way. This Body grip is very comfortable and holding the router this way give me a feeling of control with the router and better stability while routing edges. 2. The LDA Linear Depth Adjustment allows me do fine tune my cut with ultra fine adjustment. 3. The plunge-base literally float. It glides up and down with very little effort. It's like a finely crafted piece of machinery. The accessories includes a dust collection attachment, centering tool, 1/4" and 1/2" collets, T handle socket wrench if you mount the router in a router table and 2 wrenches to remove the collets or router bits. I've had this over a month and it has performs flawlessly. The 2 1/4 horse motor take anything thrown at it with power to spare. This is a 5 start router all day.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Love it Ok we all know Bosch Model # 1617EVSPK is well know to be a great router. I Owned it my self but did not last so I decided to try this Milwaukee.. Here is whats better from Milwaukee vs Bosh, Milwaukee: 1. Rubber grips 2. WAY better to remove from plunge and fix base. 3. A lot less vibration 4. Comes with a centering pin 5. The body grip, yea you have to try it to believe it. Here is whats better from Bosh Vs Milwaukee Bosh: 1. The plunge feels smother has less resistance. 2. Box it came with 3. Router Guide Options 4. Soft start My personal opinion, Milwaukee wins.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Impressed with my First Router The router feels comfortable and easy to handle with the Body Grip. Not nearly as loud as i had anticipated. The motor is easy to switch between bases and all the depth controls are easy to adjust and accurate. I look forward to seeing how it works when mounted in a table. Just another solidly-built tool by Milwaukee. And by the way, I disagree with others' comments about the case. It protects the tools well and who really cares about the size of cases? I had read and watched a ton of reviews online and was on the fence between this kit and Bosch's. Overall, I'd definitely recommend this router to all and have no regrets with my purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent tool, good price. The plunge router has great control on depth plunging, one finger adjustment. Runs smooth and the case holds several different size bits, 1/2" and 1/4" shanks, plus accesories. Easy to change bit system. Smooth startup and very user friendly. If you do any routing beyond once or twice a month this tool is worth the extra $$$.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Everything you expect from Milwaukee except where it's made I have never been disappointed with a Milwaukee power tool going back at least 20 years and this one delivered as expected. The plunge base operates smoothly and I particularly like the spring-loaded plunge lock lever. It is within easy reach of the thumb, not too stiff to operate, and locks crisply. Unfortunately the same thing cannot be said for the depth stop rod and lock. Setting the rod precisely is difficult because it wobbles around a lot before being locked into place with the locking screw. Lastly, I didn't realize until after I bought it that it was made in China. One of the reasons I have been so loyal to Milwaukee over the years is that most of their power tools were manufactured (or at least assembled) in the USA. I suspect that I will own a wider variety of brands in the future as "where it is made" no longer factors into the decision as to which to buy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product very smooth operation I bought this router to complete a project I was starting, and I was very pleased with it's operation. The delayed start feature worked very well along with the dial adjustment for the variable speed feature. Tool change was very simple, and the change-over from the fixed base to the plunge base was quick. The one minor complaint I have is the depth adjustment for the fixed does not have an intuitive scale on it. Overall, I am very pleased with this Milwaukee router, and is a great tool for me to begin building my wood working collection.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely worth it I have always been a Milwaukee fan and this router set places the bar high. It's powerful, has adjustable speeds for the bit, comfortable grips, and is durable like all Milwaukee products. The dust collector could be better, obstructs your view and can be cumbersome trying to maneuver it with a hose attatched but thats probably true for any router. When you're using it on a router table with dedicated dust collection it shouldn't be an issue. The case is built well, the coarse and fine adjustments for the bit depth are very fluid, and the two different collets included are a perk. Love this router set.
