Answer This Question

What size drill bit is used for 3/8 tap on screws
ByJun 5, 2024

Answer This Question

A 3/8-inch tapcon screw typically requires a 5/16-inch drill bit. This allows for the threads of the screw to fully engage with the material being fastened, providing a secure hold.

              What Customers Say
Summarized by generative AI from text of customer reviews

Customers say the Milwaukee 3/16 in. x 6 in. 2-Cutter SDS-Plus Carbide Drill Bit is a reliable tool that performs exceptionally well in drilling through concrete, brick, and masonry. Many users appreciate its sharpness and durability, often achieving multiple holes with minimal wear. However, some customers noted that the bit can dull or break after several uses, particularly in harder materials, suggesting that while it is effective, it may require careful handling and appropriate drilling techniques to maximize its lifespan. Overall, it is viewed as a valuable addition to any toolkit for masonry work.

They bent and broke almost immediately in high rise concrete. Went through 12 of them before I switched to 4”. They’re more sturdy and strong because they’re shorter. I guess it’s fine in a lesser dense PSI.

The bit is easy to use and works great for the first couple of holes. But the material is not strong or durable enough for its application…

                2 bits and a hard fought 5 holes later…
I am drilling into a new concrete slab. I need 3/8 inch holes by 1.5 inches deep for my sill boards. I went through two of these bits for 5 holes. And they were not easy 5 holes at all. I struggled out the gates with these bits.

Goes through concrete like a hot knife on butter. Be sure to retract the drill every now and then to release concrete dust that stays trapped in the drilled hole. Not doing so can end with a broken drill bit.

It didn’t even drill one hole
This bit didn’t even drill one hole in my basement concrete. It was getting red hot within couple of minutes of drilling, and eventually melted and turned blunt.

                    Complete garbage bit
About three inches into its first hole in brick it stopped making progress. I pulled it out and the tip had melted into a ball. Had to rig up a different chuck and finished the job with the bit that came in the packet of tapcons. Would recommend for making holes in medium thickness cardboard, maybe.

Good product if you use it carefully
I bought 2 5/32 in x 6 in for tapcon installation on concrete floor. I use them very carefully. After drilling a hole, drill bit is dipped in water for cooling. The first bit accomplished about 70 holes. Its tip bent after I drilled 3 holes and forget to cooling it. The 2nd bit accomplished about 90 holes. and the whole carbide bit is gone. I'm not exactly sure why it fail so badly. Maybe it's due to I had to use it to drill through very thin lay of wood(about 1/8 inch). The depth of hole is about 2 inch.

                          Do Not Reccomend
I’ve putchase 4 of these so far. The first 2 lasted a decent amount of time before they broke. The 2 that I bought this morning melted after less than a minute of use. Im hoping to find a more relianle brand because I am tired of having to stop working to go to Home Depot for new bits.
