I have a metal pipe of 1 inch outside diameter embedded in a tree stump which grew around it. Pipe wall is 2 mm thick steel. Would this bit be able to drill out the pipe plus some of the wood surrounding it by aiming the bit down the center of the pipe? Or is this asking too much? If it can do it, would the 8 Amp 1/2 in. Milwaukee Magnum Drill be a acceptable tool to use (chuck, etc.)? Many thanks for info.
Asked by: Stumped
Hi Coach Dave, Thanks for your reply. I had already cut around some of the pipe and pulled out the top plus some. I need to remove even more for stump grinding. The bottom is inaccessible because it's straight down, deep into the stump and roots. Driving it further down may be possible, but it's heavily corroded and I wouldn't know the result for certain. Regards, Stumped

3/8 or 1/2 inch chuck required?

Does the 1/2 in. auger bit require 3/8 or 1/2 in. chuck? The spefications say 1/2 in. minimum in one place and 5/16 in another.

I'll be able to use it for something, but not for what I obtained it in order to do. Internet is great for finding a tremendous variety of stuff, but it's too bad that vendors don't compile all of the pertinent data accurately. Of course,if the product supplied by a manufacturer comes to the vendor labeled misleadingly in a sealed package, whose fault is it? Is there a convention re augers as there is in the case of lumber dimensions, for instance, wherein a 2x4 is actually smaller in both the dimensions of its cross section? It doesn't seem so. But maybe each different manufacturer uses its own proprietary convention? It's too bad that even tools are such (as are shoes) that it really is best to see or measure them (try them on) in person.
