Great EDC knife!
I really like the Milwaukee FASTBACK knife - 48-22-1990. The button release flip open works well for me. I understand you can loosen the screw on the blade pivot if it is too tight, but I never had to. I find the knife easy to open and close one-handed. I love the clip. I carry the knife with me often. I also love the color. I've never dropped it but if I ever do it is comforting to know that it will be highly visible. The knife fits my hand well and I feel in control when using it. I filed the back of the knife in one spot so that it is flat and throws sparks great using a ferrocerium rod. : ) I find it a bit hard to sharpen. Nevertheless it is my "go to" knife for most situations. The price at Home Depot is hard to beat also!

This is a nice utility knife. The build quality is nice. Opening and closing the knife was smooth. Opening the knife requires you to press a button and then pull the blade out. The button actually is a little magnet that holds the blade closed, and pressing it disengages the magnet. Closing the knife requires you to press in the liner-lock and fold the blade in. The quality of the knife materials is okay and fits the market for those looking for an inexpensive folding knife for construction/everyday use. The blade is sharp out of the box. Since it is a relatively inexpensive knife, you aren't worried about cutting into various materials for construction work. The belt clip is functional and can be relocated to the tip side. The body is plastic and inexpensive, and not really something you can compare equally to G10 or other high end knife grip material. There's also a hole in the knife body to attach a lanyard if you wish. My expectations have been met with this knife. I can use this when I don't want to use my nicer folding knifes.

This is the best knife in my toolbox. I purchase tools on the basis of brand name, reputation, price and personal experience. I have a lot of Milwawkee products because they’ve always done what they said that I needed, and they’ve outlived their competition. Over the years I’ve collected a lot of knives, but this MILWAWKEE PRESS AND FLIP FAST BACK FOLDING KNIFE has retired the others to the bottom of my toolbox. It comes with a razor-sharp stainless-steel blade and joins it to the bright red handle without the slightest looseness. It requires the push of a button to open and it has a good positive linear lock that keeps the blade closed. It’s not going to open or close on you accidentally in your pocket or your hand. It has a comfortable feel to the handle and a hole for a lanyard to prevent dropping it. The belt clip is an additional feature that protects your pockets and it also has a limited lifetime warranty.

I already have and use the Milwaukee fastback “press and flip” razor tool with razor storage compartment. It quickly became my “go to” cutting tool, much better than the standard razor utility knife. When I saw the Milwaukee fastback press and flip single blade knife I had to try it. The tool resembles a “large” pocket knife but has a wire clip for belt carry and a lanyard hole for tether carry. The blade is 3 inches long and 1 inch wide. The smooth blade is stainless steel and represented to stay sharp. My razor tool opens easily and quickly with a simple flip of the wrist. I expected the knife to operate the same and was initially disappointed when it did not. The flip feature was stiff. I had to manually open the blade. After inspection and “experimentation” I determined that the mechanism that held and controlled the blade rotation was too tight. I used two small star screwdrivers to slightly loosen the mechanism and thereafter the “press and flip” movement worked as I originally expected. Now very satisfied with the operation. My favorite is still the fastback razor, but both of these Milwaukee cutting tools, the fastback razor and the fastback knife, are great mobile handy cutting tools.

Great design that allows this very sharp knife to survive drops and falls. Easy to open with a push of the release button and a grab of the eyelet on the blade, the knife is long enough to do about anything you need it to do. It is small enough to fit in a pocket and it has a hanging clip to carry the knife outside the pocket yet keep it securely in place. It has a limited lifetime warranty. It is a folding knife, not a spring-opening knife. It will take two hands to open it. It took me a while to figure out that where the curve is on the bottom of the knife body (toward the blade), there is a strip of recessed metal that is not pushed in but rather pushed to the side to release the blade for closing. It takes two hands to close the knife. No push and flip to open; no flip to close. Carrying a knife while working around the house or on the job is useful. I like this knife because it is big enough to do most cutting jobs on the spot but not so big as to feel like you are carrying a tool in your pocket. The stainless steel blade is sharp. It can be sharpened but you will not need to for some time to come. The opened knife has a pleasing sense of balance about it. The blade is 3 inches long; the knife is 7.5 inches long when opened (4.5 inches when closed) and a half-inch wide. The clip adds a bit more width. It feels surprisingly light. For the warranty, price, size, durability and function, I like this knife. I recommend it.

Over the years in commercial interior design and light construction I have always carried a pocket knife because I found out years ago that you never know when and where you will need one. This knife fills the gap in helpful knives that can slip in the pocket and be there when needed. The push button and flip to access the blade is very welcome as it allows one hand use, which happens more often than not. The knife is well constructed and has a very usable belt hook as well as provision for a lanyard ot belt hook. It is very comfortable and well fitted to the hand. Excellent working knife.

The Milwaukee Fast Back 2.95-in blade knife is well-made, balanced and surprisingly a comfortable grip for my smaller hands. The knife arrived with a reasonably sharp blade. I found thumb grips on the handle helpful in keeping a steady straight line with even pressure when cutting. Handle has a lanyard hole that can come in handy. You can remove the clip and reattach at the opposite end to reverse the carry on the knife to top up if you prefer – the knife comes tip down. The steel blade has dulled finish, it’s not shiney stainless. The blade is solid, no much side movement. The release button frees the knife from the liner and you can pull it completely open. It is not a “switch blade” mechanism although once the mechanism wears a little you likely could press the release button and “flip” it open. It took me a while to figure out how to close the knife. When the blade is open a strip of metal moves over diagonally across the inner liner preventing the blade from closing. So you have to push on that strip of metal a little with your thumb and the blade easily closes. My intention is to use this 2.95-in blade knife as a grafting tool for fruit trees to slice a grafting gash on the root stock to receive the new scion. The blade is wide and will be easy to disinfect. I’m glad I chose this Milwaukee Fast Back knife to keep in my orchard bag.

I have several Milwaukee FASTBACK knives, and love every one of them. This 2.95-inch folding utility knife is nice to have around the house. The housing is constructed out of durable, thick plastic, with an attached clip on the back enabling you to slide it unto a pocket, or belt. Opening the knife is super easy...You either press the button and manually pull out the blade, or press the button, and flip it open. Either way is super easy to do, and I had absolutely no issue flipping it open, or closing the blade either. Overall, this is a great utility knife to have, as I've mentioned. I am extremely satisfied with the quality Milwaukee puts into all their tools. Having a Lifetime Warranty just adds to the comfort level of tool purchasing. Highly Recommended.

The knife handle is made of plastic, seems fairly strong & durable. The blade is sharp, made of stainless steel that feels and looks strong. Good quality blade. There is technically no info about the knife on the packaging, only 2 small diagrams lacking any details. My first issue was the knife was locked in the open position. Surprisingly, I could not figure out how to close the blade, the diagram of the liner lock, was of no help to me. I had to watch an online tutorial to find the info I needed on how to close. Unlike other flip knives I have, this one requires you to push a liner lock, a small thin sliver of metal, over to the side with your thumb or finger in order to release the lock. When released, push the blade closed into the body. To open is easy, you push the release button on the side of the knife, BUT, then you have to use your other hand to pull the blade out and bring up until it clicks into the locked position. Warning:: this knife is not spring loaded, so it will NOT just flip open automatically when you press the release button. The website info and the package misrepresent the action. It says/shows "press and flip". Actually, you have to pull the blade out at least halfway. Then it takes a forceful flip of the wrist for it to open & click into the lock position. You can't just flip this open any other way! The online video even shows that the knife blade has to be pulled out by hand and pushed to the locked open position. Flipping it was not even mentioned!!! If you need the one-handed "switchblade" type action, this is NOT the knife for you. Has a sturdy belt clip and a tether ready lanyard hole. Has limited lifetime warranty. Made in China.

Slightly better than a good folding knife
I WOULD rate this 3 stars as the knife is perfectly functional as an average folding knife. However, it's not why I'd purchase a Milwaukee Fastback. This would be a lovely Milwaukee folding knife + a button lock. The flaw of this knife, is in it's design - by including the liner lock they've added a brake on the Fastback mechanism, requring excessive force to open it the way you would a normal utility knife Fastback. It's worth noting that the other Fastback with a liner lock that I've tried, the hawkbill bladed one, has this same issue. The good things first: You get a decent gauge wire clip, and can remove it or fix it to the top or bottom of the knife for tip up or down carry. It's bent so it's tight enough to grip on to and not fall out of your pocket when you sit down; but not so tight you'd need two hands to do so (a problem I had with the earlier Fastback wire clips). The blade comes sharp from the factory, good enough to slice standard paper cleanly. Not razor blade sharp, but way better than average as far as factory sharp goes. The issue here is, you need far more force to flip the blade open - it's very easy to under do it and half deploy the blade, or not even get the edge out past scales of the knife. Once you get used to how hard you need to flick this knife, that should be less of an issue - but all the same, it's crazy how stiff this knife is in comparison to Milwaukee's Fasbtack utility knives. From what I can see comparing the two styles, all Milwaukee would need to do in addressing this is NOT cut the metal and split the leaf spring used for locking in two. If the button pushed on both the cam lock and the liner lock, you should have a knife that opens and closes as smoothly as the utility knives, but with the added security of a liner lock. This is effectively how the Fastback utility knife opens and closes, though it has a single internal stud lock that the button moves up and down, which in turn snaps into one of two notches in the pivot to lock it open or closed.

            Bad steel, bad lock.
I've owned this knife for less than a month, and it is already dull enough to need reprofiling. I've made knife blanks from non hardened steel that hold an edge better than this knife. I use it almost exclusively to cut cardboard and open polymer-lined paper bags.Additionally, the locking mechanism has failed more than once. If you aren't careful, you will cut yourself with this knife doing anything beyond light-duty work like opening letters.
