What tool should be used to remove 1/2 inch grout seal from around sinks and counters?

Answer

These tools are overkill for that job, a straight razor blade in a holder (sold by HD) or a utility knife blade in a plastic holder (also sold by HD) would do that job. I believe there is also a caulking removal tool that HD sells. The seal is usually either silicone caulk or plumbers putty & in some cases tile grout, the knife will remove all of them. The trick is to get the blade flat to the caulk and undercut it, a regular utility knife can't get low enough to do that. If you found this helpful please click on the thumbs up, thanks! These tools I have used to aid in demo jobs and grout renewal. I would recommend this kit for anyone doing this task. They save time and make the job a bit easier. I use the diamond blade the most because it works really well on grout. The scaper blades will save your wrists from getting banged up because the saw vibration really aids in removing linoleum and other flooring material. I always recommend tools that aid in saving body parts.!

A great addition to my armory of sawzall weapons, these blades are nothing short of amazing. This 3 blade set is perfect for scraping loose paint, broken plaster, caulk and many other surface products needing touch up or repair. The set of 3 includes 2 flat scraping attachments and 1 abrasive blade that can be used for removing cracked or stained grout or remove old tile completely and quickly. It can also be used for clearing other materials, such as caulk, in any straight location that needs a fresh bead. This blade can also perform small sawing chores where just a nibble of material might need to be removed without having to switch to another blade. I'm finding endless uses for this set, cleaning joints or removing loose boards and paint build up that is often found behind trim boards that need replacing. This blade set is of extremely high quality and should provide many years of service if employed properly. Made of hardened steel, nickle plated for durability, they shine like the bumper of a 57 Cadillac. A nice plus, they fit into the vinyl case that came with another blade set I purchased from Milwaukee tools. One suggestion. These should only be used in a saw that is capable of variable speed both to protect the blade and the working surface. They can be aggressive and you want as much control as possible from your saw. It may be a good idea to try these blades on scrap if you've never used blades like them previously. Safety glasses are a must but you may want to use a full face shield. Once you've gotten the hang of these blades, you'll find yourself using them often and wondering how you got by without them.

SAWZALL Reciprocating Material Removal Blade Set (3-Piece) This blade set will make a great addition to your arsenal of removal tools. I have similar tools that are much smaller and very flexible for my Dremel multi-tool. These Milwaukee tools will work great with my reciprocating saw to remove things such as old flooring. They are very heavy duty. There are two scraper blades, 1.5” & 3” wide. The third tool has a carbide grit that should work well for removing grout between ceramic tiles. Pros: Quality tools Versatile Cons: None

This Milwaukee 3 piece material removal set is well made and heavy duty, made of thick metal which will stand up to years of use. When using the tile grout saw I found that the Milwaukee M12 Hackzall worked nicely as it was easier to get to the low angle required to use the tool, so it was more comfortable. I didn't have to remove all of the grout, so that M12 tool was perfect for the job. The blade can be used in my M18 full sized Recip saw if the saw is upside down & kept at a very low angle. I also used it to knock off extra cement nibs & bumps due to sloppy workmanship of my cement guys on a poured 12'x18' deck. Tip- The grout tool might be too thick for some wall & floor tile grout lines so test it in a hidden area first. The larger 33" scraper tool did a good job of taking up old tile off a countertop and getting down to the plywood, removing almost all of the old mastic. I have yet to use the 1 1/2" putty knife sized blade, but it's made out of the same thick metal as the 3" blade. The two scraper blades can be resharpened, so again, they'll last for many years. If you plan to keep these tools in a tool chest drawer, keep the plastic insert that comes with the packaging as it makes a nice holder for the removal tools, they actually snap in the clear plastic tray so they won't move around in the drawer (see pic below). Milwaukee is doing a great job of making trade specific tools that help get the job done, these 3 bargain priced tools are well made and are actually fun to use! I hope this review helped you, if so please check the thumbs up!

Milwaukee Sawzall Reciprocating Material Removal Blade Set (3-Piece) is a nice accessory to use with your Sawzall. It has two scrapper blades ( 1-1/2-inches and 3-inches) and a large grout removal blade. The scrapper blades can be re-sharpened which is nice because they can take some abuse and they are thicker than others I've used. They are perfect for removing material like adhesives without gouging the base underneath, like wood floors, if kept at a shallow angle and work carefully. The grout blade has a coarse grit and is carbide coated for faster work. I already have a smaller scraping blade for my Sawzall and have used it to scrape concrete blobs up from a basement floor in preparation for painting. The advantage is this method created much less dust than a grinder and easier than a hand tool. That scrapper was from another manufacturer that I used. These are all larger scrappers and includes a large grout blade that I haven't seen before. From looking at it the grout blade requires holding the Sawzall close to the ground to use with tiles. These are all good accessories for your Recip saw and extend their capability.

I used this attachment set for demolition of a bathroom mosaic tiled floor and wall. It worked great. I will say though operator error or improper application can cause issues. My BIL tried it with his Dewalt SAWZALL and wanted to see how it fared against a 12x12 tile floor on the main level. It broke his Dewalt. For me and my Ryobi it worked great.

Both scraper blades broke within 30 minutes. Not sure what a practical application is for them, as I was scraping old floor adhesive as stated on the packaging.

Started out well and got most of the 10'x15' room done. But then the 1-1/2" flat blade broke. The 3" blade finished the job just fine. The cutter worked better than expected. I cut through the grout and into the underlying cement. Takes some training to keep it from going to deep. Despite its shortcomings with durability, I'd buy it again for the price. It made the project go quicker and easier in the long run.
