If the shock zone absorbs torque to prevent breakage, why shouldn't I just get a cheaper/weaker impact driver and a stiffer bit? After all, why buy an impact driver with an impact absorbing bit?
          ByNov 7, 2024
          1 Answer |
          Answer This Question

The shock zone in impact driver bits and the overall design of impact drivers work together to provide optimal performance and longevity. A cheaper, weaker impact driver combined with a stiffer bit might seem like a cost-effective alternative, but it can lead to several issues: * **Premature Bit Wear:** Stiffer bits don't flex as much, meaning the rotational force and impacts are transferred directly to the bit tip. This concentrated stress can cause the tip to wear down quickly, especially with frequent use. The shock zone in impact-rated bits helps distribute the impact throughout the bit, reducing wear on the tip. * **Increased Risk of Breakage:** While a stiffer bit might seem stronger, the lack of flex makes it more susceptible to snapping under high torque or sudden impacts. The shock zone acts as a buffer, absorbing some of the shock and reducing the likelihood of breakage. * **Damage to Fasteners:** A stiffer bit combined with a less powerful impact driver can result in stripped screw heads or damaged materials. The precise control and consistent torque delivery of a quality impact driver, coupled with the flexibility of the shock zone, helps prevent these issues. * **Reduced Efficiency:** A weaker impact driver might struggle to drive screws efficiently, especially in harder materials. This can lead to increased work time and potential frustration. Impact drivers and bits designed to work together provide the best combination of power and control. Essentially, the shock zone and the impact driver are designed as a system. The shock zone's controlled flex and the driver's impact mechanism work in tandem to maximize performance and tool life. While a cheaper alternative might seem appealing initially, it can end up costing you more in the long run due to increased bit replacement, potential damage to fasteners and materials, and reduced overall efficiency.

Not really, not magnetic enough to hold an 1x3/4 inch construction screw. Which for me is a deal breaker.

Not good after a few screws driven to the deck board :(
Within in the first10 screws driven in to the board, the bit started to show signs of wear and start to slip, not sure I piked a bad batch from the store.

Milwaukee tough, no issue with gripping Torx screws. Tip seems to last and no indication of wear yet.

These bits are great. They come in a convent 5 pack and fit the screw perfectly and a good value. Above all they last. I will buy them again when ever I get down to the last one.

I had a completely seized rotor retaining bolt on a Ford Edge. Even though it had soaked with penetrant for over 24 hours, I snapped off an off brand bit and the bolt didn’t budge. After getting the Milwaukee bit, it still required an excessive amount of impacts to get the bolt free, but the Milwaukee bit survived the task like it was nothing.

Doing a large deck and need to replace several screws that were poor quality and broke. These T25 bits grab the old screws allowing for mostly clean removal. Then replacing with a longer thicker deck screw. Bits wear out so this 15 pack keeps us with fresh bits.

                      Serious quality control issues
After encountering repeated issues with Milwaukee bits, I'm done. It is not just this batch, but this batch has been the worst. I'm lucky to be able to drive two screws with each bit before it either shears off or becomes so deformed that it strips the screw heads. This doesn't happen with other brand bits. I'll favor other brands before considering Milwaukee going forward after these bits wasted my time - I had to go buy new bits before continuing the install, wasting an hour.

                        Poor Quality
I drove about 8, 2” t-10 screws before the tip was twisted. Went to grab the other bit in the 2 pack and it’s a t-15 with t-10 printed on it. Disappointed, definitely not worth it.

                          point twisted
I owned this 2 pack for all of 2 days. First day the tip of the bit twisted. I turned down the torque on my drill. 2nd day the same thing: twisted tip. This was not due to abuse. Did not even notice when it happened, except couldn't drive the next screw. Compare this to the single GRK bit I used for the last 3 months, on the same project. The metal is just not hard enough.

                            Bits did not last
I was removing deck screws from composite decking attached to treated pine joists using an impact Bosch driver. Of the five bits that I purchased the tip broke off of four of them and the fifth one became unusable after removing around ten screws. The project is still not completed.
