A drill tap is a combination of a drill and a tap in a single tool. The cutting end of the drill is a conventional drill bit. Further along the tool the drill flutes transition into a tapered thread cutting tap. This means that a threaded hole can be made with a single pass of the tool bit.
When used with an impact driver there is no need to repeatedly stop and back up the tool, so the process of making tapped holes is much faster.
The Milwaukee SHOCKWAVE 5-piece SAE steel drill tap set is a welcome addition to my tool collection.
The set includes what I would consider the most common sizes one is likely to encounter. They attached quickly and easily to my Milwaukee driver and made short work of every test hole I drilled. In cast iron, aluminum, and wood I got perfect holes that were drilled, tapped, and counter-sunk with ease. I got no resistance when threading screws and tight, wobble-free, fit. I would swear these holes were drilled in a factory.
I did not try these in my drill and they are specifically recommended for use in a driver. I suppose it would work, just not as efficiently. I was always taught that when drilling into metal you should use a lubricating oil and was surprised to see that wasn't mentioned on the package. Since these are a little pricey for 5 bits (the only reason I am deducting one star), I did use oil to help keep them cool and long-lasting.
Another quality tool from Milwaukee and a great item to have whether you need it today or want it on hand for some unforeseen job down the road.

What a great innovation for tapping. Whenever I have had to tap a hole for a screw I can’t remember what size drill I need to match the tap. Plus, I usually have problems with the tap tools not turnng the tap well or struggling to cut threads. This all in one kit solves those problems. The integrated drill bit ensures I always have the right size and using the bit in an impact driver ensures I have the power to cut the threads.
For my testing, I used this kit to cut 8-32 threads in a metal electrical box. What a joy to have it drill through the metal with ease and then cut the threads super fast. The bit even features a countersink but I did not use that feature in my test.
A few minor concerns:
1) Once I drilled through the material, the impact driver cut the threads super fast and pushed the thread cutting portion of the bit all the way through to the countersink. To get the bit back out of the hole you have to reverse, but since the new threads are not engaged with the cutter you have to be careful to ensure you do not come out at an angle cutting new threads and in essence stripping the entire hole.
2) The set does not include the extremely common 6-32 sized used for standard electrical box screws.
The web description does not indicate the correct sizes include in this kit. What is included is as follows:
8-32
10-24
10-32
12-24
1/4-20
Overall, I recommend this product and found it extremely useful.

Usually I applaud Milwaukee for their tools and accessories. This time, not so much. The idea is good – a drill and screw tap in one bit – but the design makes it a “bit” hard to use. The short tap threads cut easily, but if the threads go through the material and out the other side, it's almost impossible to get them back out (see photo). I had to use the drill (on reverse) to remove the bit, cross-threading the hole in the process. If you can stop the cut before the thread goes through the metal, backing out is easy, but even on thin material (I used 1/8” aluminum) that doesn't give much margin. Drilling the hole, of course, takes a bit of pressure on the drill and a fairly slow speed, but once the drill cuts the hole the tap grabs very quickly and before you know it you are through the material. On a different note, the shanks are laser engraved to show the thread size, but the marking are pretty small and hard to read, not like on other Milwaukee drill bit shanks where the markings are bolder.
The is no denying the quality and precision of this set. In most cases though, I'd prefer the two-step process of separate drills and taps.
The Milwaukee Shockwave 5-piece SAE Impact Drill Tap Set drills and taps at the same time, and can also countersink the top surface to allow for easier screw entry in blind assembly applications. The cut extremely well in aluminum and mild steel with minimal cutting lubrication. Based on the drill/tap material hardness, I would not recommend them for high strength/hardness steels. The bits are intended for use in up to 1/4 in. metal. The laser etched size allows for easy size identification, and the 5 piece set includes 8-32, 10-24, 10-32, 12-24, and ¼-20. The bit is design for use in Impact Drivers and Drill Drivers. I found that these worked very well in my drill press and in my mill. I especially like the ability to drill and tap (and counter sink) in one setup without having to change the cutter. These are a good addition for the home shop and for the electrician doing repairs and upgrades to exterior components and boxes. They chase and clean up corroded screw holes very well. These are made in China.

This Milwaukee Shockwave SAE 5-Piece Steel Drill Tap Set is an absolute time saver. The ability to bring drilling and tapping at a high rate of speed in a single process and into my business changes the game for us. For years we started with a more precision process when drilling (ie. press) and followed with manually tapping each hole. With modern processes, we drill and tap on-the-fly!
Purchasing options for both set and individual makes this even more versatile. Two thumbs up!
Milwaukee 5 piece set drills and taps at the same time. No longer do you need to search for the corresponding drill bit to go with the tap that you need. The drill part drills fast, and the tap makes nice clean threads. These were designed for use with impact drivers and drill drivers. If you are drilling steel, I recommend you use the impact because as soon as the threads start cutting, the drill tries to twist on you potentially hurting your wrist or snapping the drill tap. (I tested both)The impact doesn’t catch at that point, it just starts impacting.

I got this SHOCKWAVE SAE Steel Drill Tap Set to replace an old tap set I had worn out. As I have experienced with other products from Milwaukee Tool, this is a solid, high-quality tool set. I put it to use immediately tapping out 3 holes in a steel vise base so I could mount it permanently to a larger plywood base. It handled the job perfectly. As with all metal drilling, I used lubricating oil to keep things cool, and the SHOCKWAVE drill bit ate through the steel with no problem. Once through, the tap cut the bolt threads effortlessly. The drill/tap left no burs behind for the bolt to hang up on, so the end result was a very clean threaded bolt hole, which holds the bolt securely. Mission accomplished! I recommend this drill set.

Another fantastic innovation from Milwaukee Tool. These combination drill/tap/countersink bits are a super time saver. The points on the larger drills are split and back relieved for faster drilling with less force. Just be careful not to ram the drill through and possibly damage the tap and then be VERY careful with the countersink that it does not grab and drill out the threads. They do not say what steel is used but it drills like HSS. I only drilled one hole in 1/8" thick mild steel but it cut like butter and the tool showed no wear at all. NOTE: do not try to use a regular drill but make sure you use an impact wrench. That is what they are designed for. Be safe and drill and tap with proper safety eye wear on my friend.

These Shockwave drill and tap combination tools work quite well in quarter inch or less mild steel, I do recommend you try controlling the drill speed to help prevent snapping the bit. They work best in the impact drill no chance of slipping inn the chuck. They also work good in plastic, wood and aluminum. To help keep them sharp I cut out the plastic tray they came in to store them in my tool box.
