Depress the small black release button on the front side of the knife, and the blade slides right out.

I probably wouldn’t buy this one again
Overall I really liked this knife, however, I agree with other reviewers that the blade needed to be changed very soon. I’ve had the blade since November and I’ve changed the blade 5 times. I do use it a lot. But the real bummer was the rubber piece the extended the blade came off already.

I am disappointed in this utility knife...not the quality of product I have come to expect from the Milwaukee brand. First the good points: very comfortable/ergonomic to hold and blade extends easily. The disappointments: blade is very difficult to retract (which almost leaves you no choice but to let the blade remain out/unprotected between uses) and there are no instructions included on how to change blades. Furthermore, the package says there is storage for 5 blades, but no blades are included...not a huge deal, but kind of misleading. All in all, no improvement in a concept that has been around for decades.

This is a high quality utility knife. This particular Milwaukee utility knife has two features that I haven't seen before. First, the metal body is made of aluminum, so it is surprisingly light weight. It's still very rigid and solid, but the knife is much lighter than any other steel model that I've used. This is nice if you're already carrying around a heavy tool bag or tool belt. Second, the blade slider is on the side, not on the top of the knife. This makes it more ergonomic to open and close the blade with your right thumb. Other than that, it's a pretty simple standard utility knife. It has a button near the tip for quick blade changes, which works well. It has a plastic 'lid' on the bottom of the handle that can store additional blades, and the blade holder even has a steel spring clip inside to keep the spare blades from rattling around, which is a nice touch. Last, it has a nice large hole in the end opposite the blade for a lanyard or hook. Overall it's a very well made, well designed utility knife. I have one minor complaint: It doesn't come with any spare blades--the blade holder comes empty, which is the first time I've ever seen a new utility knife that didn't have at least one spare blade. So make sure to buy some spare blades if you buy this knife. One thing to note: This knife is for right handers only. If you are left handed, I do not recommend this knife. I'm left handed, so as soon as I received this knife and realized that the blade slider is on the side of the knife and designed to be used with the right thumb, I realized I wouldn't be able to use it. I gave it to my right-handed friend who uses a utility knife all day, every day, and he loves it. He particularly likes that it is light weight, as it's a few less ounces in his tool bag.

I have 3 other utility knives (aka box cutters) and this one beats them all. With those other knives I am forever accidentally changing the blade setting (opening it farther than desired, or closing it) because the slide lock for changing the blade position is always located on the top of the knife, right where your thumb naturally rests. Milwaukee solved this problem by relocating the slide lock to the side of the knife. Now, I never accidentally change the blade position. Other than the blade being fully retracted, the knife has 3 different positions for the blade: 1) just the tip exposed, 2) half of the blade exposed, and 3) the full blade exposed. The body of the knife is made of metal so the knife is tough and will take a beating, including handle being dropped. Unlike my other knives, the Milwaukee knife features a grooved grip handle, which makes it much easier to hold and control, and prevents slippage in your hand. One feature I really love is the large blade storage compartment that is accessible by a flip cover versus having to get out a screwdriver and unscrewing two knife halves, which is how many competing knives are designed. My only desire would be if Milwaukee had included some spare blades in the knife itself (and raised the price a bit to cover them). The end of the knife handle also features a lanyard hole so you can hang this knife from a belt if desired. Changing the blade also does not require that you open the knife; rather, there is a push button on the side that when pushed will release the blade. This allows for a quick blade change. Another quality product from Milwaukee.

Best cutter I’ve ever had, and I’ve gone through several in my decades of DIY. The rubber grip makes it not only easier, but I believe, far safer to use from other cutters. It give you an absolutely excellent grip, whether right or left handed. So far, I’ve used mine for cutting open boxes, cutting down boxes for recycle, and even cutting shingles to do roof repair. The blade locks securely into place for cutting harder materials. And the enclosed storage is as easy as it is convenient. And best yet, the quick release blade lock, whether turning the blade around or installing a new blade. Only cutter I use now!

The Milwaukee slide out utility knife is a very stylish easy to use knife. I love the fact that you can lock into place the blade and whatever depth you want it to be. It comes with an easily accessible blade storage that flips open for easy access. Super easy to change out the blades. This is a tool I have already used a number of times and its performed like a champion. I am very happy with this purchase. Milwaukee tools are always top notch in my opinion so this unit gets Pauls Top grade of APlus! I plan to explore and see what other tools like this they might have. You cant go wrong with Milwaukee tools overall.

CUTS WELL; COMFORTABLE to HOLD; NOT EASY to USE — Although the Milwaukee Slide-Out Utility Knife cuts well, it is not as easy to adjust as other retractable utility knives that I have used. There are no instructions on how to change the blade. After asking others for suggestions of which none worked, I discovered the secret. You need to push the black blade advance beyond where it normally stops all the way to the raised red lip. Then it is easy to change the blade. But then, it is not easy to depress the blade advance to retract the blade. In making the blade difficult to advance accidentally beyond the set position, that has also made the knife more difficult to use. The knife is comfortable to hold. It has a lanyard hole which can be used to hang the knife perpendicular to the wall. It has blade storage for five blades but no blades are included. The knife which is made in China has a lifetime warranty.

The Milwaukee Slide-Out Utility Knife w/Blade Storage is a great knife to have around in the garage for use of cutting up cardboard or like materials for the recycling bin, or for keeping in the kitchen to open packages. The knife has side slide technology that prevents accidental blade retraction. It has a lanyard hole to attach a cord for easy carrying or hanging just where you need it. The knife has an overmold grip which fits very comfortably in your hand. Another great feature of this knife is the Quick Change, Tool Free Blade Change Button, which allows you, by simply pushing the button and holding it in, the removal of the blade, and reinsertion of a new blade, or rotating the blade, without having to take the knife apart. The housing also stores five (5) spare blades. The knife comes with a limited lifetime warranty. The knife is made in China. I'm very satisfied with Milwaukee Tools and their knives. They are very well made, and work flawlessly. I rate this knife 5*s out of 5. Thank you Milwaukee Tools for allowing me to try your product. Thank you Home Depot Seeds for offering this item.

Disappointed
I had purchased the sliding utility knife that has the wire striper and very happy with it. So I decided to get another one that locked so I purchased this one. Well I cut a lot of drywall, so from time to time i need to clean it. I then tried to remove the screws and they would not budge. I used a t6 bit and was it able to get 1 of them out. Very numbed about this.
