Questions & Answers

how long will the soil be good

Soil has been sitting outside in the heat.
Asked by: Nasey
I have used commercial soils having sat outside for months, even a couple of years which showed no signs of deterioration. Soil, itself, does not go bad; but opened and not resealed bags may draw disease-bearing insects into it.

I Cannot Purchase This Within A 100 Mile Radius Of Where I Live!!!!! Not Even Any Of The Home Depot Stores Within That Radius Have It----My African Violets Are Patiently (& Desperately) Waiting For Me To At The Very Least Give Them Some More Soil, Even Though They Do Need Transplanting, Finally. Is Either The "Moisture Control" Or The "Indoor Potting Mix" Comparable? I Even Tried To "Add To My Cart" Thinking I Could Order From Home Depot Online & Got Denied From That!!!!!!!!!! Please Help???? I Use The Other Products Mentioned For My Spider Plants & Philodendrons Which Do Phenomenal But I'm Very Nervous With My Violets.
Asked by: VioletsMa
Having purchased the MiracleGro African Violet potting Mix less than a year ago, I was surprised to find that The Home Depot no longer sells this product. According to a garden associate at THD, it has replaced it with MiracleGro Indoor Potting Mix, which shows a photo of an African Violet on the bag, along with some other acid preferring plants. Unfortunately, I could not pull up the bags ingredients list, but I iimagine it must contain a goodly amount of organic matter to bring the PH reading to somewhere between 5.8 - 6.2, which would satisfy the needs of this plant. I am a long-time user of MiracleGro products and would have no problem trying this product. Of course, one can Google many other garden sites which sell a soil designed solely for African Violets and purchase it on line.

8 qt. African Violet Potting Soil Mix is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from African Violet Lover Sweepstakes essay. When my husband came home from work one day, he had the most beautiful African Violet i've ever seen. The blossoms were huge. He had purchased it from a private grower. The grower suggested special potting soil for African Violets when it needed transplanted. I did this using Miracle-Gro and the plant went crazy with blooms. I've never seen so many or so large and it was because of the Miracle-Gro African Violet Potting Soil. I also bought the African Violet Plant Food. Everyone who came to our home raved about my violets. I started new plants from leaves and gave them as gifts.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from LARGE INDOOR PLANTING PROJECT DOWN THE DRAIN BECAUSE OF MIRACLE GRO POTTING MIXES I am not a novice gardener, especially when it comes to houseplants. I worked on a large indoor planting project in December. After much time researching plants for the environment, lighting requirements, care, soil requirements, etc., I had to select from the Miracle Gro family as this is all they ever have offered at Lowe's or Home Depot (purchased at both places). I purchased and used the following: - Moisture Control Potting Mix - Sphagnum Peat Moss - African Violet Mix - Orchid Potting Mix The first 3 mixes all indelibly had the same issue in that they were INFESTED with FUNGUS GNATS and the FUNGUS that causes "DAMPING" on the plants (stems basically shrivel up at the soil line and until it falls over and dies). Had I opened the bag and discovered the gnats I would have taken them back right away (fungus gnats have a 28 day larvae cycle). Within a week or two of planting, the infestation made itself known and only got worse from there. 17 out of 17 plants have suffered the fungus gnat infestation and re-potting with newly purchased soil doesn't make any difference (ask me how I know).16 out of the 17 have suffered from damping off, and all have either died or suffered so much that they are on their way out. Note: I tried to make my own soil mix using Miracle Gro's Perlite, Vermiculite, and another medium and have had no luck in restoring these plants. Even their vermiculite is lousy and nothing like the vermiculite I used to get years ago. This was a LARGE project and a lot of money was invested in the plants and these horrible soils all for nothing. The plants are stressed to the point of death or have died. The orchid mix was so large and coarse that the orchid died in no time, the wood chunks were huge and not moderately sized such as you see in most pre-potted orchids. I seriously fault Miracle Gro for their POOR QUALITY and SELECTION of so-called soils. I WILL NOT be buying anything of theirs ever again. People should not have to COOK their soil or shock treat it with insecticides just to have normal houseplants. I also fault Home Depot and Lowe's both for having NOTHING BUT this BRAND available for purchase in the varying mediums.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good specialty product (Sweepstakes Entry) Admittedly, I am not as skilled or attentive with growing indoor plants as I am with outdoor plants... but with Miracle Gro African Violet Potting Mix, I don't have to be! I have found that this product works well, not only with the African violets on the window sill, but with other houseplants. Peace lily and pothos seem to thrive in it as well. So if you want a versatile and effective product, I would recommend it. (Sweepstakes Entry) [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Completely dissatisfied After using the African Violet Potting Mix to transplant my violets to larger containers foreign plants, including toad stools, began growing in the soil. Additionally my plants are now infested with 5 different types of insects. My planets have never been infested with insects or foreign plants. The only thing that has changed regarding my plants is the soil, and I will never use Miracle Grow Potting soil, in any form, again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lovely African Violets I had a few african violets given to me, and they were rather puney. So I bought the African Violet potting soil and repotted them. Now they are covered with flowers...well..all but the tiny one. I still haven't seen it bloom but it has really gotten stronger and very pretty. Love this stuff...have a bag and a half left! Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great mix for my African Violet! I received my first African Violet a couple of months ago. I wanted to make sure that it had the right soil mix to help it stay healthy. There was no question that I should buy Miracle-Gro African Violet mix. So far it has continued to do very well since re-potting it in this mix. I will soon add the liquid food to my plant care routine. I am very pleased with this mix and it was very inexpensive.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I'm Angry I bought a bag of this soil a month ago, knowing I would need it soon to repot. I opened it today only to discover an infestation of fungus gnats. Gross. Thank goodness I got the bag outside and away from my other plants right away. I have spent countless hours and money keeping my plants healthy. Had I used the soil right away they would all be infested. Uggg!
