Q:I need to remove some heavy duty silicone adhesive used to stop leaks in vinyl gutter connections. Will this harm the vinyl in anyway?
by|Mar 27, 2024

Answer This Question

A:  Lift Off Spray Foam and Silicone Caulk Remover is safe to use on vinyl. However, if there are dyes/coloring in the vinyl, it could change the color. To prevent that from happening, you can mask off the vinyl so that formulation doesn't impact it. We also recommend you brush on Lift Off rather than spraying it on the surface. This way you also get an even distribution of the formulation onto the silicone adhesive.

Q:Will this removed smeared dried caulking only on the window sile if applied carefully? When the vinyl windows were installed and caulked, they smeared the caulking down on the window sile about 1 inch. It is now dried, dingy and nothing will clean it.

    Answer This Question

A:  Motsenbocker's Lift Off Spray Foam and Silicone Caulk Remover is formulated to remove dried on caulk from various surfaces. It can remove caulking from window sills. However, it will also remove paint. Therefore, if it's an unpainted window sill, we recommend applying Lift Off with a paint brush so that you have even distribution and can cover over and around the edges of the caulk. For additional information, please call customer service (800-227-5538). We're glad to assist.

          works
We had to remove 20 year old silicon caulk stuck on a Kohler sink and a shower door. Could not remove silicone with scrapper. This product worked wonder. You need patience and a few applications to temove and clean it up with scrapper and cloth.

I have a grouted window and need to remove the grout. It is amazingly resistant to a sharpened putty knife. So I decided to try this poduct. The sprayer pump was faulty - 3 or 4 squeezes would produce a couple of blobs of the gel. It would not spray 'a spray', only shoot blobs. It didn't have any effect on the caulk, not even the remnants that remained from where I had scraped/pulled most of the caulk off. However, any paint on the window sill that was touched by the gel peeled right off! So now I have spots of caulk and bare aluminum on the spots that I tried it on, and I still need to remove the caulk, and repaint the sill. There is no warning (that I see) on the label concerning paint damage, although as an after thought, it might be expected. The additional instructions when the label is peeled back are also very hard to read. This stuff may work on certain types of caulk, but not on the stuff on my windows. Test it very carefully if you want to give it a try.

Dear Home Depot customer, we appreciate learning your reaction to this product. As a reminder, it doesn't work in the same reactionary time. Nor does it melt or dissolve the caulk or foam sealant that you are removing. Due to its water-based formulation, it breaks the bond between the material you are removing and the surface. And, yes, as you commented, it will remove paint. Please contact our customer service department (800-227-5538) and we will be glad to assist. liftoffinc

            Saved my bacon!
I had to redo the former owner’s apocalyptic caulk job. (Well, I /think/ he tried to caulk the bathroom tile—from the caulk spattered at least to the second tile from every joint, it’s possible that his hyperactive four-year-old twins had a caulk gun battle during bathtime.) To say that I had to remove a large quantity of misapplied silicone is like saying many people lost their lives in WWII. This product turned a martyrdom of a job into mere torture with an end in sight. Pump slowly; patience is a virtue.

I thought the silicon would NEVER come off
But it did with this stuff. The contractor used silicon sealant to install an under mount sink in the master vanity. The sink eventually came loose and needed to be reinstalled. The silicon was extremely stubborn to remove, leaving a thin layer I couldn't even scrape off with a razor blade. After spraying this on it I was able to scrape down to the porcelain and use liquid nails to reinstall.

We value your comments and would very much like to assist with your removal project using Motsenbocker’s Lift Off Spray Foam & Silicone Caulk Remover. It does work on removing both wet and dry/cured caulk and spray foam sealant. We recommend first scoring the area before brushing Lift Off on to the spray foam and/or caulk, on top and around the edges. (This allows an even distribution of the product.) After letting it set for upwards of three-to-five minutes, you can begin removal by working under the caulk and sealant to be removed. A firm plastic or nylon scraper is recommended. Depending on the amount of caulk or sealant to be removed, this may require a couple of applications. If you need further assistance, please call our customer service department (800-227-5538). We’d be glad to assist.

Thank you for your feedback. It appears that you had an issue with the spray applicator. We would like to propose removing the spray cap and pouring the solution into a plastic tub. Score the foam sealant in sections. Then brush Lift Off on to the surface (on top and around the edges) of the foam sealant to be removed. This allows for complete coverage and even distribution. For even better penetration, cover the section with Saran Wrap where Lift Off has been applied. Allow Lift Off to work by letting it set for upward of five minutes. Then use a plastic scraper to lift the foam sealant off the surface. For additional assistance, please call customer service at 800-227-5538. We are glad to assist.
