Questions & Answers

I bought a kit a few years ago and would like to increase the diameter. Can i purchase a second kit and expand the diameter?
ByMay 2, 2026
1 Answer |
Answer This Question

This is a great question. **correction. I'm being told that no, you can't expand the diameter with another kit without making a lot of cuts as you experiment with it.***. I personally haven't seen it done though I'm finding the urge to play Tetris now almost irresistible. Sidenote: we do split one cap into halves for the highback row now. When you are designing the idea, you will need to take that into consideration. Thank you!

How many bricks on bottom layer to start?
    ByDec 18, 2025
    1 Answer |
    Answer This Question

My understanding is that the firepit kits are built on the pallets from the top up: the top cap row should be the bottom layer on the pallet. You will have 22 -8" caps, and one 8" cap that is cut into two pieces. If you would like a copy of the instruction sheet, I will be happy to email it to you. Please reach out to mdavis@mutualmaterials.com. Thank you

Can I use fire brick as my base?
      BySep 14, 2025
      1 Answer |
      Answer This Question

Firebrick is traditionally only for indoor, or sheltered applications, as it will deteriorate more quickly when exposed to the elements & water, than if you were to use it in a normal fireplace application. A firepit wouldn't be the best place for it to last unless you want to replace it annually. You can use concrete pavers under the firepit, then fill the first row with crushed gravel/base rock. Even burning directly on a noncombustible surface may eventually lead to cracks in the concrete so the base rock layer is very important. Thank you.

Can extra pieces be ordered? I would like the height of this to be 20 inches all the way around. I would need 13 extra 8" blocks pieces.

          1 Answer |
          Answer This Question

Thank you for asking. The Mutual Materials 58 in x 20 in Concrete StackStone Highback Firepit Kit is a particular number of blocks. If you happen to live in WA or OR, you can check with your local Home Depot to see about special ordering extra blocks in the sizes that you need. Thank you

Can you mortar and tile the outside and/or the caps?
            ByJan 20, 2021
            1 Answer |
            Answer This Question

Dear Valued Home Depot Customer Ark, the face of the blocks used to create the Mutual Materials 58 in. x 20 in. Concrete Romanstack High Back Fire Pit Kit in Cascade Blend, Gray are rough textured & not smooth. You might be able to mortar over the surface but it isn't necessary & will alter the appearance of the firepit. Thank you

Would you make a kit like this but without the high back and make it 16 or 20 inch high? thx
                ByOct 25, 2020
                1 Answer |
                Answer This Question

These kits come pre packaged with the amount of stones needed to build the kit you chose. If you purchase the high back fire pit but didn't install the jumbo pieces you would have a 12 inch high firepit that would be the same height all around.

Quality, Easy to Install, Preparation is Key
The product is high quality and easy to assemble. The greatest amount of time is prepping the hole. Follow the downloaded instructions. It will take more time in preparing the hole than assembly. My hole was challenged with some large rocks. A couple were removed and others chiseled. In the end, the reward was worth the effort

Large Fire Pit-Just What We Wanted
We installed this fire pit in May 2021 for our backyard. We chose this pit because of the inner diameter. Most fire pit kits are too small requiring wood to be cut to certain dimensions. This pit can take logs as they come. Everything was as-advertised. No instructions but the website of the manufacturer had a guide. We elected not to use the high-back but go deeper into the ground (using generic foundation stone) and add 3" underground air supply vents to cut down own smoke. With this feature, once the fire gets going, the fire pit is low-smoke and burns hot. The blocks fit together well but are a little off in areas making the inner diameter a little more than 42 inches. This was not a big deal as we seated each row and then used the masonry glue. Doing one row at a time, and then dry fitting the above, took longer but made sure there were no mistakes. Tapped with rubber mason mallet, as necessary, before the glue set. Tips: make sure your hole is as level as possible. We added two inches of stone dust mixed with 3/4 inch crushed stone to the hole before laying stones. We tamped and leveled every 1/2 inch or so. A level hole will make sure your pit goes together nicely. We cemented around the perimeter of the two layers of foundation stone prior to installing the pit kit stones just to make sure there was no movement. Only down side is that HD does not carry individual stones from this manufacturer. One of the cap stones is cracked and I need to reach out to the manufacturer to see if they can ship me a replacement. Picture shown with Titan fire ring and SS Fire Pits snuffer. Both fit well with the 42-43 inch inner diameter. It was a project but worth the effort. We have new-found respect for stone masons. Should last for years. Highly recommend the kit.

Response from Mutual MaterialsJun 15, 2021
We're glad to hear your installation went smoothly and you're enjoying the fire pit! We intentionally spilt one cap piece so the top back layer will start with one half piece to continue the running bond pattern. If you need anything else feel free to reach out anytime. Thank you for your business! mutualmaterials

Bought two. Not exactly as in the photo
We bought two of these. 1600 pounds of stone. Times two. It was a good workout! Ours are not as we expected. In the photo, you can see that the caps (the final, top, smooth course) is staggered over the double-high stones in the back. That is not what we received. All of our caps are the same size, and the kits do not include the half-sized caps photographed here. This means the higher pieces are not as secure as they would be if the caps were staggered. Instead, we just have one long seam/crack that runs vertically from the cap through the double-high stones, effectively three courses tall. Not ideal, and disappointing for the money. But great stones and it generally looks OK. We will fill it in with some masonry grout or something to keep it strong and make the light coming through that gap less obvious

Response from Mutual MaterialsAug 10, 2020
For additional strength you can use construction adhesive to secure the caps. To gain the running bond or offset pattern on the top layer you have to split one of the caps in half with a chisel and hammer. We're happy to hear you're enjoying your fire pit, and thank you for your business! mutualmaterials

Fire pit was fine after I was able to get it. The trucking company associate would not perform the FREE dilivery. Eventually I had to rent a truck and perform the free delivery myself.

Looks great and easy to construct. Only problem was the delivery -- had to call numerous times to find out what was going on. Then finally told trucking company that if they couldn't get it to us the next day (we knew it had been sitting in a nearby city for almost 2 weeks) they could take it to Home Depot. Took that "threat" to have it delivered.
