Can I mount this on top of my car to use while road tripping/camping?

Asked by Che February 16, 2021

It is a big panel and has a rigid metal frame, if you have a pickup truck that would probably be an easier fit.. The panel works great though, good output I get a nice 6.5A@28.8VDC ,,,,,,happy with that.

I bought two of these panels do I hook them up in series or parallel to charge one battery? Can I...

Asked by JamesBB February 5, 2021

Answer

Hi James, You would hook them up in parallel to charge 12 volt batteries. That will double your charging current and charge your battery 2x as fast. You would need a 20 amp charge controller to only use one for the total system. It is also no problem to run one charge controller per solar panel and have the wires simply connect after the controller to the battery. If you have any pother questions or want to discuss further, send us an email directly at cs@rdkproducts.com and we will take all the time needed to make sure all your questions are answered. Can I use with a grid tie convertor direct to house current?

Asked by ge February 3, 2021

Answer

This solar panel is made to charge a 12V battery or battery bank. not directly to the house. Preferably, the solar panel should be the only source charging the battery, if battery is connected to a converter also, that would interfere with the operation of the charge controller. No more of a automotive connector, you can crimp you own solar connector on if you want though, I spliced a heavier wire near the panel as the wire that comes with the panel is very small gauge. P.S I might have voided the warranty. but my system can handle more amps now.

The specs say 9.5 amps. That is 114 watts, not 180. Why the over rating? (Watts = Volts x Amps).

Asked by Waltb December 15, 2020

The voltage is really closer to about 18 volts x 9.5 in a good sun. The charge controller is supposed to drop the voltage before sending to you batteries. But if the controller actually works, none of my 5 did. So you should purchase a qualify MPPT controller so you do not burn out your expensive lithium batteries, or have a FIRE, due to cheap controllers.

How many 180W MC Solar Panels can safely be run on kit #53180 (using supplied Charge Controller)?

100% failure rate of all my charge controllers, DO NOT USE!!! FIRE hazard. But the panels are great. the charge controllers will either burn out or cause a FIRE!!!

Is there a way to use these panels without batteries to use AC battery Chargers?

What are you trying to do? The question makes no sense.

How can it be 180W on a 12V, 9.51A (from specifications). Maybe it is a 19V panel?

I bought this panel to charge the battery on my camper, but its primary use so far has been to provide power for a small cabin using a power inverter. Take it out of the box and plug it into the charge controller and hook it up to the battery. Much better and more efficient in full sun of course, but still generates power on cloudy days. Enough for small light, radio, and charging batteries. Very happy with the purchase.

Great Panel when on sale - Buy @ $120 in July or December
Well built for a budget panel and I've been happy with the output this spring. These appear to go on sale for $120 in July and December. I got one last Christmas and certainly hope they do the same again this Summer and Winter. Absolutely look elsewhere compared to the ridiculous everyday price on HD, but a solid deal when on sale. I'd rather they exclude the controller as it's instant E-waste. Overall very happy as long as they continue to have times when these are reasonably priced.

Low power output
I haven’t been able to get more than 80W out of the panel. The charge controller worked for an hour and then died. I tried contacting customer service about these issues but no response. So far I’m quite disappointed in this purchase.

Hi Mark, Thank you for taking time to comment on your Nature Power 180 watt Solar Kit. You purchased one of our only Nature Power solar panels with almost all 5 star reviews. It is a great product. Please contact us at cs@rdkproducts.com and we will quickly resolve and troubleshoot your issues. The charge controller can be replaced at no charge if there is a problem with it. Getting 80 watts out of the solar panel is definitely something we can help with. It sounds like a simple adjustment on how you are testing the solar panel. Testing for watts takes a specific measurement tool which we will be more than happy to help you with. These panel tend to pout out close to 190 watts as they are slightly under-rated to make up for conditions in the USA that are less than sunny. We look forward to hearing from you. The panels are well constructed, seem to work well, and they mounted easily. I can't speak to the quality of the controller because I purchased a larger controller and linked two of these panels together in parallel. As expected, the panels are generating about half the current for which they are rated at best, over several weeks, but that is sufficient for my needs. I don't get a lot of bright sunny days, and my panels are mounted flat of my RV roof instead of tilted towards the sun. Given this, they are a good value... just don't expect the full rated capacity as specified, as the specs are for ideal conditions.

This was a super easy to set up system and was charging my 12 volt battery on day 1! The only reason it did not get 5 stars is because the charge controller is not an mppt but rather a pwm great intro to solar power, wait for it to go on sale though!
