A:  Jak - I hear what you are saying, however, that is not how the product has been tested and intended to operate. Here is a portion describing its intended purpose from the spec/website: "The downspout drain grate features a unique design that captures more stormwater runoff than a traditional flat water grate. Made to fit on top of your 12 in. catch basin drain, it's built with an angled grate, with the high end closing the distance the water drops from the downspout, preventing water from splashing against the building wall or ricocheting off the grate surface.     Answer This Question

    A:  Without knowing the specifics regarding the amount of rain, roof runoff, quantity downspouts, size of roof, I would go with the 12" basin based on the "frequent heavy rains" you experience. The 12" basin/ grate can handle around 155 gallons per minute, compare to the 9" which will do aroun 110gpm.

      Clogs with leaves
      Clogs with leaves and requires cleaning after or during every storm. I tried everything I can think of. I may try putting a screen over the face like the other reviewer to keep leaves and sticks from clogging the grate.

        I’m using this grate for catching rainwater off my roof....
        I’m using this grate for catching rainwater off my roof. This works great for what i need it for. I used an adhesive to attach a thick screen over the front of the grate to prevent debris from the roof from getting inside the catch basin. It works great!!
