A: Not wood. Fire resistant
A: The manufacturer publishes a spec sheet on its web site addressing test results for a number of measures of fire resistance. The results, unsurprisingly, appear to indicate performance towards the upper end (less desirable) of various standards. After all, the composite is a mixture of recycled wood fibre and HDPE plastics, yielding an overall rating as a Class II building material. On the other hand, all this stuff will burn and give off smoke when exposed to direct flame. Practically speaking, I have a gas grill commonly in use the country and it stands on on the solid board decking NTW makes. As so little heat radiates towards the flooring and there are no sparks, I have no issues of fire hazard and am very comfortable using this product in place of wood.
A: Hi Janet. Our composite material has a flame spread index no greater than 200, or a Class C rating. More information can be found on our IES-ES report here: http://www.newtechwood.com/us/pdf/NewTechWood-ICC-ES-Evaluation-Report.pdf and on the MSDS here: http://www.newtechwood.com/us/pdf/MSDS_UltraShield.pdf. You are welcome to use a gas grill in the vicinity and may do so without issue.
