Yes. Attaching the cleat to the studs is what you want to do. You don’t want to attach it to drywall as drywall isn’t as strong as the studs. Try centering the piece your hanging in between the two studs for the best support. Good luck

I think you mean the bottom of the picture or mirror being hung, right? The bottom of the picture angles back toward the wall. Some people place those little clear bumper pads under each bottom corner to bring the bottom out a little and protect the wall
