Q:Can I use this on the floor? We want to install a floor window to allow viewing of the wine cellar below through the floor so it would be walked on.

Answer This Question

A:  We wouldn't suggest using acrylic for this application, polycarbonate would be better, but a structural engineer should be consulted.

        Answer This Question

A:  Acrylic/plexi is harder than polycarbonate, so cracks easier. So if drilling holes to mount, the holes need to be in from edges a couple inches and not cinched down to tight. It can be glued on as well but keep in mind the glue will show

In the past I used these Acrylic Panels on Desk-Top Easels I made for my Nieces three little girls. This time I did the same and I made two more for my Grand-daughters that are pretty artistic. I will be buying more of them soon cause another of my nieces has a daughter going to College in Florida who is at the moment doing classes from home, she is an Art Major and needs one at home like right now. I threw in some pictures, hope the Acrylic shows up, the glare is pretty bright. I love the way they look and the Acrylic just makes it perfect.

Very clear sheet. The green edge provides a nice glass look. I used it as a shield for a stained glass panel in a door and it doesn't detract from the appearance of the stained glass at all. The sheet was exactly the size I needed, so I can't comment on how well it cuts.

Good, but not 0.177 inch thick.
Actual thickness is 0.154 without the two protective films.

This stuff is rather amazing. I cut it with a jigsaw with a wood cutting blade, then sanded the edges with an orbital sander and used it to protect the top of a piece of furniture. Wow, this looks exactly like a piece of tempered glass! I was thinking of polishing the edges but as it turned out it's completely unnecessary as it looks like glass without fussing over the edges much at all. Why not just use glass? Because you can cut it yourself and it's so much safer. Some notes on working with it - I did not have the problem with it melting from the friction of the saw blade, which I've had with other plastics in the past. It is also quite flexible so you need to support the part you're keeping as well as the part you're cutting away. The label says it's suitable for light duty shelving but I don't see how that's possible. It's way too flexible, and even a 12" shelf would flex once you put any weight on it. What it's GREAT for, is protecting a wood table or other surface.

Heavy and strong sheet acrylic approximate 5/16 inch thick. I was needing to build a cold frame for my garden to get and early start on lettuce, so when this product became available, I procured it. This is acrylic sheet is very clear and strong. It will not break and shatter like glass pane and is well suited to use in the cold frame or any other project. It is easy to cut to any dimension but I built the cold frame to accommodate the acrylic sheet size. I am including an image of a simple cold frame that I build FYI. For the price point, a ten year warranty, and piece of mind knowing that it will not break like glass, this product is a good choice.

Clear Acrylic Sheet This is a perfectly clear acrylic sheet with edges that appear green like tempered glass often appears. It is 0.177 in thick and comes in a 2’ by 3’ sheet. It is covered on both sides with plastic to prevent scratches while handling. It cuts easily with fine bladed saws. The edges sand and polish smooth easily. I am very pleased with the quality of these acrylic sheets.

This transparent acrylic sheet has the appearance of glass- it even has a green hue at the edge. However it is much less likely to break than glass and has only half the weight. It is easy to cut with woodworking tools. I use my table saw to cut it and using a slow feed I get a really smooth edge. I have used it to make microscope slides, boxes and box dividers. Other suggested uses include desk-top protection and light duty shelving.

*Great Product, recommended.* Needed a clear protective surface for my very old end table and while the old one was glass, it certainly wasn’t very fun when it finally cracked and made a mess everywhere. Once I installed my new surface you can hardly even tell it’s there. I received multiple sheets from this manufacturer and all of them arrived well packaged and in good condition so no complaints in that department. As far as build quality each sheet was identical in its size and form. I measured each of them and while I noticed one reviewer having a problem with their sheet being undersized, all of mine were not. Each of mine came in at slightly larger than 24x36 inches(I’ve included pictures) so I’d like to believe that if there were any problems with the factory cut, they have been fixed. Thicknesses were also correct and yes it’s green, although barely visible depending on the angle. In addition each sheet came out to be almost absolutely square and I verified this using the 3-4-5 rule. Furthermore all of my sheets had their plastic coating well intact. One minor complaint if I had any at all would be that the factory edges are a little rough. This is easy enough to fix with a saw and is probably why they are slightly oversized. I enjoy working with acrylic. As someone who works with wood a lot the two often go hand in hand. For my use, aside from a protective table surface, I like to use this stuff with shop jigs, and for windowed cabinets and the like. This stuff is easy to bend in multiple ways such as a heat gun and is even easier to cut. Weather you use a table saw, circular, or band saw you should have no issue working with it and I’ve already put it to use with a few things I’ve had on my to-do list. I can easily recommend this product and this manufacturer and they have impressed me with the quality of materials they offer. It's always nice to have something USA made as well. I also think their pricing is competitive once you start looking around at other offerings. You get a fairly thick sheet at a substantial size and fair price, doesn’t get much better than that.

I got this for a table protector for my office. The sheet comes with peel-off protective plastic film on both sides. The dimensions were 1/16" oversize. The edges are not finished, they are slightly textured and the corners and top/bottom edges are sharp. The downloadable instruction sheet details several ways to finish the edges - scraping, sanding, flame polishing, or buffing. The FAQ says that the material softens at 320 degrees, so as a test I tried using a heat gun set 900 degrees to finish the edges. This sort of worked but the going was very slow and the finish was a little uneven. I had better luck using an orbital sander, which worked quickly and left the edge with a matte finish. The sheet is very transparent and free of blemishes. There is a very slight greenish cast to documents placed under it. I measured the thickness as .165", or 11/64".

Cutting acrylic is not easy. I thought that I would put that right up front because after reading the description for this 24 in. x 36 in. x 0.177 in. Clear Acrylic Green Edge Sheet, you may think it is. Please don't let me scare you off, it's just a time consuming process to get your piece exactly the way you want it. If you want a beautiful cover for your end table or shelf or frame-less picture frame, this is the material that you want. I've been cutting glass and acrylic for decades and, except for the fact that unlike glass it can be scratched, acrylic is much better because it doesn't shatter. One of the main drawbacks when replacing glass with acrylics is the green edge that glass has and that other acrylics don't have. This problem has been addressed by the OPTIX Company. It may seem like a little thing, but if you are replacing a piece of glass with acrylic on your plant stand, end table, etc., it will become a big thing. To get the same really cool look of glass, you must have the green edge. Now, you may be asking yourself...why not just use glass. It's less expensive and it already has the green edge. Well let's look at some of the reasons. · First and foremost, it doesn't shatter. · It's safer than glass. · It's easier to drill holes into. · You can warp it, bend it, shape it, and engrave it. There are several different ways to cut acrylic. One method, scoring and snapping, is similar to glass cutting. The difference being, on glass, you score once and then snap, on acrylic you score many times to cut a deep grove before snapping. This particular piece of acrylic is very thick...about twice as thick as the kind you might get from a hardware store .177" compared to .093" so you will have to make several passes. You can use a saw on acrylic (including a jig saw with a special acrylic blade) and even use heated metal (not common). Typically, when scoring and snapping acrylic, the finished cut is not as clean as glass, so sanding is required. Sanding is required with all methods of cutting acrylic. The good news is...it sands a lot easier than glass. One of the coolest things about cutting acrylic is, once you have made your cut and sanded it down to a matte finish (which looks very nice), you can then use a torch and give it a beautifully smooth edge that looks fantastic, like expensive, high-end glass. Using a torch is quite tricky, you must keep the flame moving along the edge continually or it will ignite with very bad results. Keep in mind that when using a torch for this purpose, you are actually melting the edge of the acrylic (see the video accompanying this review). The problem is, the melt temperature of acrylic is very near the ignition temperature. If you do ignite the acrylic, blow it out immediately and you will probably be able to fix your mistake (best practice, don't let it catch on fire). I'm very excited that OPTIX has created this medium. After decades of having to use glass to get that green edge, I now have the choice of acrylic with all of its advantages. Lastly, you may be asking yourself. Is this Plexiglas? No. Plexiglas is made from acrylic but it is a trade name that a lot of people use as a generic name when talking about acrylic sheets. Much like using the trade name Kleenex when talking about facial tissues.
