The 1-1/2 in. x 5 yd. Open-Mesh Sand Cloth does everything it's intended to do and it does it well. A must have for a pipe/tubing installer. I use it for cleaning and deburring copper/brass surfaces that I intend to solder, also on plastic surfaces and pipe (PVC or equal). Sometimes I use it "very gently on wood" and on hard to reach places when preparing surfaces to be refinished.

This product goes a long way, because of the open mesh design that allows for the shavings to fall out and not clog up the sand "pores" . Making it last longer. It also can be used wet. Try doing that on closed mesh. You wear off the grit in no time. This sand cloth can be used wet or dry. I often find the jobs I work in are some sort of wet. It product saves me time as I do not have the make the surface dry first. Great value because it lasts way longer than other types of sanding cloth.Worked equally well on plastic or copper.

As a person who has used the abrasive cloths for years, this 1 1/2 in. x 5 yd open mesh cloth is a unique and inventive change. The 120 grit is a little courser than the old cloth I used. It works very well, for all my cleaning uses. I use it for polishing copper tubing before soldering. The open mesh not only does a superior job, but it also keeps the cloth from clogging while sanding large amounts of copper during larger jobs. It is made by OATEY, a well known plumbing supply company.

I tried this product today, with mixed emotions about its effectiveness. Yes, it’s a good standard abrasive for cleaning copper components prior to soldering, but it’s not overly efficient at removing stubborn paint and other substances. It will eventually work to remove many stubborn substances provided you apply substantial elbow grease, but I don’t consider that kind of effort to be “efficient.” In that case, you might be better off with a belt-sander or wire brush drill attachment. The paper roll is neatly packaged in a cardboard container, which serves double duty to both hold the spool in place, and to dispense only the portion you need. But if you’re working around wet areas, as you probably will be when doing plumbing work, the container is not likely to last long before it becomes a soppy mess. On the plus side, (1) the paper is very easily torn down to size by simply ripping it with your fingers, and (2) the course grade removes debris quickly and the open mesh doesn’t clog as readily as a fine grade paper. Overall, it’s a good product to use, but don’t expect it to perform miracles.
