A:  I believe this is for a 2" opening. But yes, it gives a very tight seal. My plumber recommended it. But if your drain is 2 1/2", make sure you get the right size.

A:  If it's the right size it will give you a tight fit, but sometimes there is a problem with how the size is measured, inside or outside diameter.

          by|Aug 9, 2023

A:  I really doubt it as the expansion is good for about 1/4, But Without putting it to the test, I really don't know for sure.

For those doing bathroom remodels this test plug is a must. I originally purchased a simple plug (looks like an over-sized milk cap) to do my shower 2 inch drain. This plug has a screw to compress a rubber gasket to ensure a good seal. To make sure your new installation holds water, you install this plug to seal the drain, fill the shower with water, mark the water height with a marker and leave overnight. If the level goes down, you can assume you have a leak you'll need to repair before going further with the tile install. I'm sure I'll get years of use from this product. It's true it doesn't come with instructions but there's plenty of YouTube videos on-line to view.

This Oatey 2” test plug is perfect for my vacuum pipe system! While the intended purpose is for pressure testing pvc systems, I will be using it as an easy on, easy off plug for my shop’s vacuum piping. Turn the butterfly screw and it compresses the rubber to tighten around the inside of the pipe; turn it counterclock to loosen it. Easy peasy. Oatey’s warning lettering on the plug is hilarious : “Caution: Stand clear while in use.” I suppose that’s to remind folks that it’s pressurized and not put your face too close to the plug, lol! Yup, no face next to the plug! In my case, the vacuum pipe might my eat my face, hehe! Nope, no face close to the pipe end here, no siree!

The Oatey 2 in. Mechanical Plastic Test Plug is designed for use to seal pipes or to hold pressure while you are testing them. While I may at some point use this test plug for the purpose it was intended I wanted it for something else. In my basement woodworking shop I have a dust collection system with multiple hoses and fittings to help keep my lungs safe. I have times when I need to easily and quickly temporarily plug a hose connector to stop air leakage which weakens the draw/suction of the dust collector to the other outlets. I have various sizes of these for such times and they work perfectly. Gone are the days of wandering the Home Depot isles looking for something just the right size to stuff in the end of a hose fitting, now I can just turn the wing nut until I get a tight fit.

The ultimate in simplicity and ease of installation. I just cut off the unused drain pipe, cleaned the inner surface with a few swipes of emery cloth, inserted the plug and tightened the wing nut. Mission accomplished:-)

Oatey makes the best pipe cap money can buy. No cheap plastic that breaks down after one Winter/Summer, and no huge price tag either. Just place over the opening and tighten the seal. Then you can forget all about that open pipe. I highly recommend.

I would much rather have a test plug that can be inserted into the pipe farther instead of just the end.
