Product Overview

Widely beloved for its richly colored foliage, multi-seasonal interest and compact growth, the Crimson Pygmy Barberry is an excellent choice for a wide range of landscaping applications. The most notable characteristic of the Crimson Pygmy is its beautiful colored purple foliage displayed in the spring through mid-winter. This unique shrub is considered Semi-Evergreen as its foliage remains much longer into winter than comparable plants. Crimson leaves turn in autumn to an unexpectedly bright shade of red. Autumn is also the season when Crimson Pygmy produces its small, bright red berries which cling to the branches long after the foliage falls in mid-winter. These berries bring a striking winter appeal that's all too often lacking in landscapes today. Low and compact growth make Crimson Pygmy perfect for borders and lawn edging. The burgundy colored leaves combined with its low growth also make Crimson Pygmy the perfect companion to any green leaf plants and particularly those with yellow foliage. The Crimson Pygmy can also be trained as a low-growth hedge if desired by planting these shrubs in close proximity. The Crimson Pygmy Barberry is a beautiful dwarf shrub which boasts deep purple foliage spring through summer, making it the perfect companion, accent and border plant.

ordered 3 of these. when they arrived, I opened the box and all three had barely any leaves on them. They look nothing like the ones in the pictures on the website. I planted them and watered twice a week for two weeks. No new growth. Sadly disappointed with this purchase. I will be returning all three to the store for a refund.

This shrub comes bent and thrown in a box loose with no packing material to protect it. Not even a bag around the container to prevent dirt from coming out. There was literally dirt on my front step before I even opened the package from it leaking out of the crack in the box. Pathetic and totally careless. The plant is barely purple and is completely smushed. Can not believe I wasted fifty dollars on two of these. And I’m stuck with them since I’m not going anywhere during covid. Maybe I should crumple them up and slap them loose in a garbage bag and mail them back. That way they’ll already have a bag to throw these worthless plants in the garbage.

I’ve ordered a lot of plants from Home Depot recently, and everything I’d received previous to this had been healthy and well-packaged. These two barberry shrubs, however, looked unhealthy and were very badly packaged. I received the two shrubs thrown sideways in a small box barely big enough to hold them, branches bent and snapped and crammed down with no wrapping or padding in any way to help shelter them. Also, one of the shrubs looked almost dead with no new growth evident anywhere on the shrub. I photographed all of this before removing them from the box. As the ability to email customer service directly has been taken off the site during this time, and the last time I called when an item was missing from an order I had to hold for 40 minutes before getting a person to help me, I decided I would just write a review about the poor quality and terrible packaging of these bushes rather than spend another 40 minutes on hold waiting to speak to a person. Sending living plants back in the mail isn’t really an option, so I decided to put them in my garden and hope they’ll recover. But I feel it’s important that Home Depot knows that someone in their packaging department is doing them a great disservice with their poor packaging, and also that they’re sending out plants that don’t look healthy. I wouldn’t have spent $30 a shrub for plants that looked like this. This is an outlier experience for me because Home Depot has previously shown exceptional care with packaging and quality assurance for their plants. I rarely write reviews, but I felt this situation warranted one.

It came a little weak looking. I'm hoping it will survive. The branches are turning brittle, just hope it makes it.
