Product Overview

Large creamy-white flowers bloom in spring, but the Red Twig Dogwood saves its best show for the fall and winter months in the form of gorgeous bright red stems. Not only do the stems provide visual interest outdoors, but they also make excellent cuttings for seasonal arrangements. The deciduous Red Twig Dogwood does best in USDA Hardiness zones 2-9 and reaches a mature height of 9 ft. with a 5 ft. spread. The brightest colors are shown throughout the tips of this shrub in its new growth. This shrub favors rich, fertile, moist soil and pairs well with companion plants that need summer water. When planted in full sun its stems become their brightest red. This dramatic shrub can be counted on for year-round visual impact in borders, wet areas, woodland gardens and cutting gardens. Its a must-have for those who crave color during the chillier months.
  • Plant is shipped at a height between 12 and 24 inches in growing seasons, or a height of 6 inches in winter when dormant and pruned for maximum growth
  • Red twig dogwood is prized for its bright coral-red stems
  • Branches are widely harvested for use in seasonal arrangements
  • Red twig dogwood provides intense year-round visual interest
  • Beautifully large and fragrant creamy-white flowers bloom in spring

Larger than I thought they'd be!
The plants look pretty healthy, a few dead twigs, but overall, the plants look good and appear to have buds for next season's growth. I won't put them in the ground until spring but will transplant them into larger pots for the winter.

Upon arrival the 3 we ordered looked great! Nice hearty size. We followed recommended instructions to a T, planted them according to instructions and watered as directed. We planted April 30th. Today is June 29th and we have nothing! No growth, no flowers appeared or leaves. We have to return the dead shrubs for a refund. We REALLY wanted these to grow as they are normally a BEAUTIFUL shrub.

I hope I get to redo this review more positively. I received the plants in a dormant state, tall twig with roots in March. Shipping was fine. We planted, have watered, cared for them. Nothing has happened with them at all and we're into June now. Are they dead and I'm wasting my time or will they fill in next season? I can't find any way online to ask about them. I guess I'm going to stop in a store to ask.

1 Gal. Red Twig Dogwood Shrub - surprised how good they looked out of the box
I saw some less than perfect reviews, but really wanted to get these for the year round color and deer resistance. I am glad I did. Two plants arrived in a long box. I was worried until I opened the box. Inside were two well shaped and ready to spout plants. Each is about 2 feet tall with extremely well wrapped dry roots for shipping. The packing worked well and kept the root healthy and whole. It was basically a bundle of hay straw snuggly wrapped around the roots and then contained in plastic wrap. I was so excited that I unwrapped one just to see the roots. It is soaking in a bucket of water in the picture and is already sprouting. These plants are worth it. I just hope the deer are not as excited about these as I am :)

The plant arrived surprisingly good. The package is very secure, nice and neat. The plant looks health and the leaves are green. This is how it look after I unpack it and move it to a container.

I just got 2 of these trees mid July and im disappointed that they are so small for the price i paid. I should have asked how tall they ship them out at seeing as its JULY, the height of summer and they are not in the dormant season so i naturally expected more height-wise. Have ordered plants earlier in the year and saw that they were dormant (small). I dont know why they did it but the tops of the little bushes were cut off down to 12 inches -i thought this was only done when they are dormant? Anyway, the pots were cellophaned to keep the dirt and moisture in but the leaves had lots of brown spots on them. I really wanted these plants to give as a gift but im holding onto them to see if they improve before i hand them over. Not happy.

The red twig dogwood plants came with leaves wilted and so we were sceptical (they're bare roots but not dormant). We followed the instructions and planted them anyway. They're now taking off with new leaves. Would have given a 5 rating if it weren't for the initial weeks of waiting to see if the plants would survive.
