My dwarf Gala apple tree arrived yesterday and was planted today. I was very impressed with the size of the tree as I'd expected to receive 18" twigs with no leaves. Instead, the tree was 36" tall from the top of its container, with bunches of leaves already formed (see photo). The roots were packaged in shavings and a plastic container, and then thoroughly wrapped in plastic to preserve moisture. The shipping box was 4' x 4" x 4" which was perfectly sized for the plant and protected it well. The root system was a surprise and a bit of a disappointment. The root were pretty minimal and not at all as advertised. However, I remain optimistic as the rest of the plant looks so good. Two days after planting, the tree looks great. A couple of the leaves wilted and likely won't recover but that's pretty minor and the rest look good.

Despite being planted on day it was received, the tree is dead over a month later despite sun, hydration, and good dirt in the late spring/early summer. I wish I could get a refund.

This Gala was one of 5 trees that I purchased through Home Depot. It is doing very well.I also had 2 Braeburn, and 2 Honeycrisp in this order. One of the Braeburns broke dormancy almost immediately, the other took almost 4 weeks (in south Texas). One of the Honeycrisps is just now breaking after 4 weeks, but the other is not going to break. The rootstock has vegetative growth, but the scion epidermal layer is puckered and the buds are dehydrated.

I ordered two roots. They were delivered approximately one week apart. Each package had no item description in the box or on the root. One root began to sprout and grow as advertised. The other (2nd delivered) did not. I bought two roots to ensure fruiting. I have emailed Online Orchards twice and included a photo of the root that has not begun to grow, asking them which of the roots I need replaced. The pic shows colored marks on the root so only Online Orchards can tell me the name of the root to replace. Online Orchard does not practice simple common courtesy or customer service.

I understood when purchasing this item that due to the cost it may be small in size. I was surprised to find just a stick in the box. I am hoping that with time it will grow and become healthy. At this point it is just the trunk with not many, if any, branches. Fingers crossed. I guess you get what you pay for.
