Product Details

The Italian Plum is a fantastic, well-rounded tree that always produces a significant amount of extra sweet, dark purple, oval shaped fruit. A key benefit of Italian is that it's everbearing, meaning the fruit keeps ripening all summer and early fall. Italian also blooms quite late for a plum tree, which is beneficial to avoid late frosts. This makes Italian ideal for colder climates where other plum trees wouldn't survive. The Italian will stay quite small with proper care, making it easy to keep fresh fruit within arms reach. If you're interested in a plum tree and have minimal space then Italian is an excellent choice.

Q:I thought my tree was dead because it did not get any leaves. Last week I noticed growth from the base of the tree. Probable from the point of the graft. Will this be Italian Plum? Or will it be whatever it was grafted to?

    Answer This Question

A:  European plums are generally self-fertile, i.e. no pollinator needed. They can grow up to zone 9 but require about 700 chill hours.

          Italian Plum Tree Bare Root
The two Dwarf Italian Plum Tree's arrived today, almost a week earlier than planned. They were well packaged (see photo) and both look very healthy. Excellent price and each tree (size) is about 3 feet tall. These Italian Plum trees are typically difficult to find but Home Depot had them in stock. We are looking forward to planting them both in our yard and having plums in the next year or two.

            Only Time Will Tell
Right now, this tree is just a stick. I'm keeping it well watered and babying it, so hopefully it really is alive.

Quick Sprout (1 week) - Don't let the bare root look fool ya
I was shocked when I saw the box. First, for the price, I was thinking it would smaller. The tree was a good 3ft tall and I didn't have a 5-gallon pot. The roots were HUGE and I wasn't sure even a 5-gallon pot would be big enough. It came packaged very well with the roots moist. For the first 3 days, I did an ebb and flow treatment since I did not have a pot big enough. I found an old pillowcase and used it as a "grow bag" and would water the roots twice a day in my kitchen sink and leave the tree there to absorb the water but making sure it was not sitting in water after the watering. On day three I went and purchased potting soil and a temporary pot to place it in without the pillowcase. (See pictures). Well-drained with a plant tonic to counteract transplant shock. I covered the soil with live sphagnum moss and then installed a grow light with full-spectrum LEDs plus Red light. I gave it 3/4 of a gallon of water/tonic mixture. For the rest of the week, I would add a 3oz-4oz banana peel tea directly to the roots per day. By the end of the week, I was already seeing green sproutlings popping up everywhere!! This tree has so exceeded my expectations I am tempted to purchase another one. My plan is to grow and keep this tree indoors for the majority of the time and work a Bonzai treatment of sorts. Keeping its height to 6ft while the roots stay healthy. I have been looking for this type of tree for years, even trying to grow from seed from plums I had in Germany (major fail). And whenever I attempted to purchase a tree it was either out of my price range or out of stock. So to have this tree not only be so affordable but also to respond to planting so quickly, is a longtime dream come true. I would highly recommend purchasing!

              Plum Tree Issue
Ordered 3 different trees... two have buds and are doing well. The plum tree arrived with 3 branches (about 3 inch each) pointed downwards and a couple upwards. Not a good sign. I believe they are all dead as they have no flexibility to them. No growth since arrival - in contrast to the others.

The bare root plum tree arrived in good condition. I followed the directions on how to plant it properly. It has been a couple of months and there is no sign of life. I am pretty sure the tree is dead.
