About This Product

Winesap is truly an all-purpose apple with a multi-tude of uses in cider, apple butter, apple pies, desserts, and of course, fresh eating right off the tree. The large fruit is colored bright crimson with soft white speckles adorning the skin. Winesap apples have actually been referenced their outstanding flavor as far back as the year 1804. This is a true American variety which is believed to have been discovered during the Colonial days, and was incredibly popular from that time, the 1700's, up until the 1950s. Its wide cultivation for over 200-years speaks volumes about the many amazing qualities of Winesap apples. The sprightly sweet-tart flavor is reminiscent of Pink Lady apples, while also remaining unique with its tangy tasting notes. Winesap is also well-known to be 1 of the longest lasting apples after being picked off the tree. This was a huge benefit in the past 2 centuries before apples were kept in cold storage to sell in grocery stores year-round. Especially prized for apple cider and its long shelf life, Winesap is a wonderful apple worth growing in any home orchard.

What root stock are these apple trees grafted on?

      Answer This Question

Based on the height/width of 15ft, I'd suspect M.109 or M.111 rootstock for these trees. Just an educated guess though.

ground, unknown nutrient concentration, yet sandy soil, watered once a week, shaded half the day, less shady as it grows taller, roots has access to dry cool soil on one side and arid soil on the other.

Does this need to be paired with a second Winesap for pollinating or can another apple trees be used, say Fuji, Granny Smith, or Delicious?

                  Answer This Question

It will not pollinate with another winesap. It needs to be paired with two different varieties, such as a crabapple or two fruiting apple varieties that can pollinate one another. Here's a chart: https://www.orangepippintrees.com/pollinationchecker.aspx

Winesap apples are actually a "triploid" variety. It needs to cross pollinate with two different varieties that also cross pollinate with each other. Alternatively, you can have it cross pollinate with a self fertile variety such as Golden Delicious or Grannysmith.

I purposely ordered for fall planting after I was gifted this variety of apple from a friend's mature tree. My saplings arrived securely packaged, I was slightly dismayed that one has almost no roots - but I'm hoping springtime will bring new growth.

The actual tree came in wonderful condition and has responded well to being planted. However, I ordered several trees- 9 of them, and only 4 came labeled. I had to guess on which were pear and which were apple, since they are dormant. A label on the tree would have been wonderful!

Online Orchards Winesap Apple Tree cam as advertised. About 4 ft. tall and dormant. It was in a tight fitting box. I opened both ends and cut the box lengthwise for easy removal. The Root Ball is wrapped in straw and burlap. I'm in a cold planting zone (Michigan) so I'll have to wait to plant. I'm holding it over in aa 5 gallon bucket in the basement where it's cool. Winesap Apples are one of my favorite apples. I'll try to add to review after planting.

The winesap tree was packed very well and came with a long plastic pot with soil to protect the roots. Tree trimmed shaped well and very healthy. New growth started almost immediately. Very happy with this purchase and would definitely consider buying more fruit trees this way.

Arrived with tons of leaves, buds and flowers. Of course it was May so ordering during other months may not have the same result. One month later new leaves and branches are evident. Happy with our purchase.
