I just installed this valve to replace an older model in a 3-station manifold. When operating (valve open), it makes an audible buzzing sound. The older models are silent. Is this normal?

Mine does not buzz, so that would seem to indicate that yours does have an issue. The buzzing, if it is coming from the solenoid, may indicate that there is a poor connection going to the solenoid and it may not be getting enough voltage. Yes they can, but strongly suggest you don't open them manually in that manner. I've had a considerable failure rate using that method. First year, when I air blew them out, used that method, the following Spring one would no longer close....thought it was a bad unit. Second year, did it again, following Spring two would no longer close. Highly suggest you use a 9V battery to open each of the valves "manually" to air blow them out, doesn't take much voltage and hardly any current to open them this way.

Yes 1 inch is better. It would be even better if you can make a loop with the 1 inch rather than have a dead end line.
