Q:Can I use this on top of existing batt insulation on an exterior wall

Answer This Question

A:  Yes, it is fire proof and easy to apply

by|Nov 18, 2022

A:  Hello Mario, you can all UltraBatt Insulation to existing insulation in a wall cavity, if the cavity is deep enough to fit the insulation without compression. Compressing the insulation will reduce the R-value. Also if the existing insulation is a faced product you will want to make sure you are not sandwiching the facing between the layers of insulation. Thank you for your inquiry!

      A:  yes

      by|Nov 15, 2022

A:  It is thick and not near as flexible as regular fiberglass. But if you have the room there is no reason you can't just put it on top of existing fiberglass insulation

        by|Nov 15, 2022

A:  Yes if the thickness of your wall allows you to do so

                  Answer This Question

A:  Hello HAMILTONWORKS, Owens Corning Manufactures the Thermafiber UltraBatt in both a regular binder containing Formaldehyde and a Formaldehyde Free version. Thermafiber Formaldehyde Free products are not available for the retail market. The regular binder UltraBatt is manufactured with a binder that contains formaldehyde as an ingredient. During the manufacturing process, however, these products are cured at a very high temperature and virtually all of the binder formaldehyde is eliminated. The amount of formaldehyde in the finished product is less than 0.01% by weight. At this low level, and because we oven cure the product during manufacture, out-gassing of formaldehyde is extremely low and is not a significant source of formaldehyde when installed in a home or building. Thank you for your inquiry!

                    Inferior Product
Got a few bats of this product as Rock Wool wasn't available. What a mistake. This stuff has a noxious rotten egg odor, the insulation media feels sub-par, and to top it off the black glass is not well mixed in so you will encounter big chunks that tear out and try to ruin your knife as you cut it. I have absolutely no idea why this product has so many five star ratings. I'm hoping the sound deadening is as good as some of the reviews say or it's a waste. The odor is concerning.

                    Dear NotHappy --

I am so sorry to hear about your experience. During the manufacturing process the insulation is cured in an oven. In some cases, the binder is not completely cured and may cause a burnt sugar odor. This odor should dissipate over time. That time can vary depending on the weather conditions. In many cases once the interior finish is installed you will no longer smell the insulation.

                    Thank you!

                      5 stars despite awful odor
Mineral wool has terrific advantages over other types of insulation. You can read about them elsewhere so I won’t go into it. This is easy to cut and fairly neat to install. The one major fault I find, and you may not be willing to live with it, is the awful odor. Kind of a sweaty urine if I had to describe it, and six months later it still is apparent.

This was very easy to cut using an insulation knife and installed between studs great. In my case, some of the studs spacing was not 16" centers so I had to cut the insulation into multiple pieces to get it to fit. I found you could use the studs as a guide when cutting. For example, I pushed the insulation against the left stud of a pocket and used the inner edge of the right stud as my line to cut along the insulation. This seemed to work pretty well and went quickly. This was for a bathroom and, except for one exterior wall, mainly for sound reduction and it has definitely worked on that front. I can barely hear the shower running when not in the bathroom. I also noticed that the shower wall tiles don't get nearly as cold as they used to prior to insulating the walls, so an added benefit there. One minor note is that the insulation has a distinct smell upon opening it. I didn't find it offensive, but I could certainly seeing it bothering someone else. The smell dissipates so it's not like it's a permanent concern. Overall, very happy with this purchase and would definitely use it again.

I was insulating a garage with 2x4 walls and a 2x8 ceiling. I doubled up the batts in the ceiling to achieve R30! This would not have been possible with the other insulation design for a 2x8 cavity. What I like best about working with this product is that it stays in place. Great friction fit. The only con is some of the batts were a bit fragile. There was definitely a difference in the resiliency and integrity of a few batts, but most were fine. A couple of batts had to be handled really carefully as they were sort of brittle and crumbling. But like I said most were fine. I love the fact the batts a designed to fit 2 vertically in a 92-5/8" stud cavity without any cutting. Installing the insulation in the ways went really easy. I used an electric carving knife for the cuts and this worked wonderfully. I will never use fiberglass pink insulation again after using this type of insulation. Easier to install, better R value and better fit.

I am a 67 year old female "rustic" DIYer. Was finally insulating an exterior concrete block wall in my laundry room. Put up a stud wall, air barrier, batt insulation (THIS PRODUCT), moisture barrier and drywall. This insulation made an immediate and HUGE temperature difference in my whole basement. Recommend without reservation. This product was easy to handle and apply. Fit into a standard stud wall as stated. However, when needed to resize, was easy to cut and fit. NON-ITCHING!!!!! Looked at other products, bought some. Found this product and returned the other stuff. Best decision. (Pictures are in reverse order. Oops.)

So far I’ve used this product to insulate my garage. The noise from the garage door opening has been noticeably dampened. I used roxul for my basement. There is very little difference between the products in my own opinion. Take care when pushing Owens into place to avoid fraying (roxul also did this). Others have used plywood for this, I managed with my hands just fine. I’m currently working on my homes exterior walls where standard fiberglass was installed, so I will update on its effect on my homes comfort. At half the price I wish I would have used in my basement. This is a quality product with great sound dampening and easy installation. I will continue to use.
