Questions & Answers

how much does one of these packages weigh?

wanting to know how much one package weighs because I want to buy enough to get the price break. of course I can go to the store and guess the weight by picking it up but really hoping to hear from owens corning manufacturer for specifics. thankyou.
Asked by: doityourselfer
To answer your question meant for the weight of a bundle or 1/3 sq it really depends on the single being used. For instance certianteed has 30 year, 40 year and 50 year shingles and most series have an option for each . A traditional 30 year comp will weigh around 225 but as i said really Varies product to product and by the life span due to the fact than the shingles with longer lifespans are built up more with additional layers usually up to three (tri-laminate) some shingles such as one built to have an architectural look and simulated to look like slate or shake, such as the presidential series can weigh up to 425 a sq. Remember to always ensure your roof can handle the load and that although not much the edge metal, SA direct to deck aroumd penetrations and on all problematic areas and your underlayment will all add to the overall weight of a completed sq

Should the starter strip overhang the drip edge or should it be flush with he drip edge? Can the roof shingles overhang this starter strip or should they be flush with the starter strip?
Asked by: RSP
RSP, The Owens Corning Starter Shingle Roll should be placed granular side-up with the top seal strip closest to the outer edge of the roof. Remove the backing from the underside of the roll and carefully align the edge of the roll flush with the drip edge. Secure the roll by pressing it firmly against the drip edge and underlayment. After properly applying the Owens Corning Starter Shingle Roll the roof shingles should be laid overhanging the starter strip by a distance of 1/4” to 3/4” to direct runoff into the gutter. Be sure to press or roll the first course of shingles firmly down onto the starter shingle roll top seal strip. This seal helps prevent against leaks and against damage to shingles caused by wind lift. Remember that personal safety is paramount when working on any roof. I was picking up supplies for installing a rooftop ridge vent at my local Home Depot when I stumbled across their Werner/UpGear roof-safety harnesses. I thought that these things would cost a fortune but HD had two different kits by UpGear, one at about $99 and one at about $135. It looks like the difference between the two kits is the type of rope-grab device; one being manually operated as needed when moving about on the roof, the other having a self-trailing rope-grab which allows for greater mobility. Both kits are complete units, each containing a 50’ rope, a harness, a lanyard, and a temporary roof anchor. I purchased the self-trailing kit and within a half hour of arriving back at home I was safely working on top of our two-story home. Home Depot also carries permanent roof anchors by UpGear for about $22 each. I will be attaching one of these to each end of our roof so that I will have a readily available safety system when needed, such as when cleaning gutters or installing Christmas lights.

It was laid first with lap cement and nailed along the top edge. then a grip edge flashing was nailed along the bottom edge. The first run of 36" wide 90# roll roofing was then laid over the starter roll and flashing with lap cement and nailed along the top edge. This is almost the recommended method for roll roofing except that I didn't have to cut my starter run from a full width of 90# material.

Much easier and faster to install than conventional starter strip. The glue is pressure sensitive, so pick up a roller to press it down and seat it. Make sure it is straight first, because after rolling it won't come back up.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from small investment to get your roof done faster At first I thought this was yet another solution to a non-existent problem...a way of Owens Corning to squeeze a couple more bucks out of a roof project. I was wrong. Its a big help to guarantee a nice straight edge with minimal gaps for water to exploit. It goes on quick and easy and takes a lot of the hassle out of the first course. It's thin compared to the actual shingle, but it has to be in order to roll. Can be installed by one person, but two is better.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Starter roll short. This product will save you time. Unfortunately the box states the roll is 33' 4". So I only purchased one box since I only needed 32" Turns out it was only 30' 1" long so I had to cut a shingle to do part of the starter ( I only needed 32'). So I would recommend you purchase an extra box just to be sure you have enough, you can always return the extra box if not needed.
