Q:I live in an apartment and share a wall with a noisy neighbor. Will these panels help with sound coming from there side?
by|Mar 23, 2023
1 Answer
Answer This Question
A:Â No, these are designed to absorb sound reflecting off hard surfaces within a room; they do not increase sound blocking from adjacent rooms. A common way to reduce noise from a neighbor is to increase wall mass by adding a layer of drywall and decoupling.

Received two panels (24 x 48) . After unboxing I noticed a strong chemical smell similar to popping open a jar of acrylic paint. Then upon first touch, the surface of my panels felt as though they were covered with fiberglass-like dust. These tiny particles easily transfer to your skin and create an itchy sensation (and can not be healthy to breath).
I saw some references to the smell/gas in other reviews, but never thought the release from an acoustic panel could make a person ill... but it did. The first night after un-boxing I woke up in the middle of the night with the toxic taste and smell of the panels in my throat and sinuses. There was such a harsh chemical release that I had to wrap the panels with plastic garbage bags and put them in the bathroom with the exhaust fan on. ( I live in a high-rise without a balcony so I could not bring outside.) Though it is tempting to just throw them out, I want to get my $200 returned. So therefore I will be dealing with these for one more day. I am going to my nearest Home Depot first thing in the morning. This review is to question how a company can sell something that would actually make a customer sick?! Owens Corning did reply to some of the reviews here and acknowledged the gas/fumes/smell.

I purchased a handful of these to install on ceilings in an office building that had very unique designs and produced a lot of sound problems for the occupants. These panels only come with hardware for mounting to walls, but we used toggle bolt anchors and spray painted more decorative bolts to mount them to the ceiling. They came out looking pretty good and the staff at the offices noticed a big difference in the sound for the rooms. We plan on installing more of these in other areas with similar issues. We didn't paint these as they were going on white ceilings and we didn't want to risk the paint affecting the acoustic properties. The fiberglass construction feels a little sketchy, but just wear clean gloves when you're handling them and it shouldn't be an issue. The sound absorption properties were noticed more significantly in the smaller office. The bigger one still needs some panels installed on walls and possibly directly above the desk where the manager sits. Also, we tried ordering some 24"x48" panels to do some other areas, but almost all of them had damaged corners and we returned them to just order more of these. None of the 24"x24" panels we ordered came damaged.
In summary, good product at a decent price. Best to wear gloves when handling. Don't order 24"x48" panels.

these REALLY work!!
Oh so pricey, but they really work! I downsized to a small house - my daughter’s room is just a few feet away and we are on different time schedules. As she talks and laughs with her friends, it woke me up. She installed two sets, putting cloth tapestries over them as art. She used a stapler to attach the tapestries with no problems I’ve only heard her ONCE since then. Even the AC vent sound is noticably reduced as soon as you enter her room. A slight smell once the plastic wrapper is removed at first for a couple of hours (we put it in the storage room) so the odor issue must have been resolved. Smells much like new fabric in a store to give an idea. Im going to put them on my ceiling in my room because there is not much wall space available. One of the packs did not come with the attachment, but we were able to attach with screws. The ONLY reason not five stars is the price. If you REALLY need something to work right now and are willing to pay $240 for 16 square feet (I suggest at least 32 sq ft for an average 12 x 12 room just in my circumstances) then this will work!! I want more for the rest of my house now...

After I put one very thin coat of paint on these sound panels the sound absorbing properties were cut in half. Painting them almost renders them useless. I would NOT recommend painting these.

Hello Brad. Thank you for your review. The method in which the panels are painted can affect the sound absorbing qualities. Brush/roller painting and spray can painting are not recommended. Use of an airless paint sprayer with a fine tip is the recommended method for painting these panels. Care should be taken not to flood out areas with too much paint that the fiber weave becomes filled. It should only take one or two medium wet coats to cover.

Good looking way to quiet things down.
These styrofoam backed fabric panels are stylish and meant to accent room decor without being obtrusive. These panels are the perfect solution when the shape of a room and the hardness of the surfaces encountered in it produce echos which cut down drastically on the ability of persons to understand normal speech. They are covered with a coarse but attractive cloth. Once in place, other decorative materials or objects may be hung on them. Mounting hardware is included with them which will allow placement on almost any wall surface including hard materials such as brick or cement. Four mounting plates with three sharp tines protruding can be screwed to the wall and the panel simply hung from these. This makes the panel easily adjustable in terms of placement.
The box showed up at my house badly damaged. When I opened the box I was pleasantly surprised to see the manufacturer had the foresight to place the panels in the box with the nice sides facing inward, so the damage was on the back side of the panel. My second pleasant surprise was how nice the fabric was! I was expecting to have to re-cover these with better looking fabric, but it looks so much better than I expected I actually wish I could get more of this fabric to cover my speaker grills. If you can use basic hand tools you’ll have no issues installing these panels with the included hardware. It’s very straightforward and easy. Of course they do the job they’re supposed to do, but they look terrific while doing it!
The acoustic panels are a 5 star win. I will admit that I did not pick these up initially for their acoustic properties. I picked them up to add some contrast to the bare white walls in my office. More for decor than acoustic properties. With that being said I will get to why I think these panels are so great.
First of all the panels come in all types of colors to choose from when ordering and if you don't like the colors they are already made in you can choose panels with a paintable fabric. Owens Corning really had the average consumer like myself in mind when producing these panels. The panels are well made of a dense acoustic foam substance that makes them very rigid and fabric is glued and stretched around the panels very tightly.
Installation is as easy as it gets. You get 2 panels and it comes with all the hardware you need to mount both panels. The panels are secured to the wall via a spiked mounting plate. Along with the included anchor screws and the light weight of each panel. There is no need to fuss around with finding studs. They can be mounted directly to the drywall and that's saying a lot coming from me because I always try to avoid mounting anything in drywall only. It is in no way crucial and quite frankly would be a waste of time to try and measure out and line up each impaling clip (Spiked mounting plates), as the alignment of these clips does not in anyway affect the alignment of the panel on the wall. So basically you measure and get a rough idea of where you want the panel. Mount 2 plates on top and 1 at the bottom of where the panel will be placed. Again you do not have to worry about them being perfectly aligned. One the mounting plates are secured to the wall you simply live the panel to where you want it to go on the wall press it into the mounting plates and apply a downward force at the same time. The spiked impale the back of the panel securing it to the wall. Installation of these panels just could not be easier
As I said I did not purchase these for acoustic properties but after installing them on my wall I found that they had great acoustic properties. My office is sparsely furnished with only a desk, tv, stool, and my road bike. So there is usually an echo when you talked. After mounting a few of these panels on the wall the echo was pretty much gone. Another thing I notice as well is that with the panels up I am able to hear the audio from my tv better. Built flat screen tv speakers dont usually project very well so it can be hard to hear the tv when you are sitting fairly far back from it. These panels allow me to keep the tv at a lower volume now than usual.
My only concern with these panels is the corners of them are a little weak. So Id advise people to be careful of the corners of these panels until you get them mounted on the wall. Dropping the panel or placing it down hard on the corner will dent the corner. Other than that I would give these panels 6 stars if I could. They gave my office some contrast while not being to overstated which is what I was looking for. They are well made and very easy to install. They also have great acoustic properties. So weather you are looking for something to decorate your wall are something to cut down on noises in the room. Id give these a try.
