Questions & Answers

Can it installed over existing an 3 tab shingled roof. ?
ByFeb 19, 2026
1 Answer |
Answer This Question

Hello Bill, during a reroof when new shingles will be installed directly over the existing material, no additional underlayment is generally required because the old roofing serves the same purpose as the underlayment. Thank you for your inquiry!

Is this equivalent to a 72 pound cap sheet?
      BySep 22, 2025
      1 Answer |
      Answer This Question

Hello Aldo, it is our understanding that a 72 pound cap sheet is intended for a final protective layer in built-up roofing systems (BUR) while the ProArmor product is a synthetic underlayment to install under shingles. You can review the ProArmor Data Sheet here. https://dcpd6wotaa0mb.cloudfront.net/mdms/dms/Roofing/10019655/10019655-ProArmor-Data-Sheet.pdf?v=1720512846000 Thank you for your inquiry.

I think what Rich was asking in his Oct 27, 2024 "Does it ventilate" would be better asked, "is it vapor permeable". Walls breathe, 15 lb felt breathes, even most house paints breathe. Is the product moisture vapor permeable or impermeable?

                  Great until it isnt
Coverage at 42” is less than other products at 48”, which i needed (my fault). my biggest complaint is a 2 foot circle cut out of the material about 100’ into the roll. How does that even happen? i’m on a time crunch so i’ll suck it up.
                  by
As a contractor, I’ve never used a synthetic membrane before. I used it this time because I was not going to roof for several days. I replaced all of the 1/2” plywood with 3/4” and used ice & water on all valleys, rakes and eaves and this on all other areas. Make sure you use cap staples if you’re not roofing for a few days because it will pull away from the staples only. I’m still going over this with 30# felt too. Should be a pretty robust roof. Really good and strong product.

                    Installation Instructions Timebomb
We installed this on a 4:12 pitch with a 3+ inch overlap, according to Owens' instruction. For slopes less than 4:12, Owens instructs 22. The product leaked everywhere, immediately. We taped the horizontal seams to experiment. No leaks. We determined water wicks uphill via capillary action and gets behind the paper. We have a video record of our findings. Due to simple physics, this will have likely affected all 4:12 installs performed according to Owens' official overlap instructions.

OwensCorning Pro armor 1001 SQ ft Synethic Roof Underlayment Roll is excellent for waterproof the roof . It is super light and easy to roll in and out . It has straight light and marking spot for roof nailing . I like it durable ,easy maneuver and cutting . I do I have two unfavorable dislikes about the product. For one, the 1001 square feet on the label is misleading . One roll just can't cover 10 squares roof area. Two, it doesn't mention what kind of roof nail is best for this kind of product. What size is best suitable for this product.

                      crap
not water resistant at all, I've done over 100 roofs in my career, and the one time I try something new, it's backfires so bad. installed it, next day we had rain. and I got leaks all over the house. it did $3000. worth of sheetrock damage. review only let me give one pic. if you live in the northwest, don't do it.

The Owens Corning Proarmor synthetic roof underlayment is a great underlayment that is durable and easy to install. It works great on OSB roof deck and is designed for use under asphalt shingles. It's lightweight, yet strong and is easier to roll out than tarpaper. Depending on the roof slope the overlap is 3-4 inches. If the asphalt shingles are not installed over it the same day, it can be attached to the roof using 1 inch steel cap fasteners and must be covered within 30 days of application. Each roll is 42" wide x 286' long .

Definitely superior to felt paper. Great temporary rain barrier. Installed with recommended nails with 1" plastic washers and it never moved during the entire shingling process even with us walking all over it. Doesn't distort with dampness. Didn’t rip with a little wind. You get 1000 square feet in one of these rolls at about 25#, versus 450 sq ft in a roll of 15# felt at 36#. While it is more expensive per squire foot, this is much easier to work with. It’s much lighter, over twice as much per roll, almost impossible to rip, cuts easily, lays flat, and is just an all-around a great product. This is the first time I’ve used a synthetic underlayment but will not go back to felt paper. It comes with a 10 to 30 year warranty depending on who’s singles you install. I would recommend over felt paper any day.

I really like this product over regular 15# roofing felt paper. It lays flat which really aids in installing it quickly and easy to overlap. I used plastic round cap roofing nails to install this but I think one could easily use staples. This underlayment is very resistant to tearing yet still cuts fairly easily. It looks like it would be slick to walk on but it is not. No slips or slides on it.
