Q:Do all 6 sides of the insulation provide the same R13 value?
by|Sep 20, 2024
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Hello BG11, 1. R-13 is tested for thermal value through the 3.5” thickness of the product. That should be consistent for the entire batt. Thank you for your inquiry!

Q:Do the sides of the insulation provide any insulating value? Specifically, if I install this insulation into a cantilever floor space, one end of the insulation will be touching the rim joist, so will it provide insulating value to the rim joist?

The face paper was gathered up on most rolls which made it difficult to install. Some rolls had 8 inches of paper stuck together so the insulation didn’t match the paper.

          easy to install
I prefer the rolled, faced fiberglass insulation. It is designed to fit in between studs on 16” centers but gives wide enough edge tabs for some wiggle room. I’ve found tacking and the top and working down is best. For spaces without wiring/obstructions, just tack it down the wall until about 4” from bottom plate. Then gently pull the roll down and use a chunk of 2x4 or a level along the top edge of the bottom plate to give you a reference line to cut on. For bays with wire running across, get enough staples in the top third or so of the wall so the edges used to secure the roll won’t tear and fall. Then cut to length. For me, the best way to cut around the wiring is by folding the insulation back up (so the pink side is facing you) to where the fold in the insulation is even with the wire and then cutting a slit in the insulation at the fold. I did it this way because the insulation cuts better when its compressed. Then just stick it in the wall and move on

                Installed in my cabin
I installed it in my cabin up north. It was easy to work with. Remember if you use the roll to stretch it out as you get into it. It cut easily with a razor knife, paper side down, I know that sounds weird but thats how you cut it. This is not like insulation of old. I didn't get all itchy. I installed it in my cabin which is 32x12 in 1 day pretty much by myself. I noticed a difference that night. I'm looking forward to the snow to see how well it really works!
