Why not just use this for interior walls instead og using the fire and sound guard version? They both reduce sound, limit fire, but this one has r-15.

How many square foot in a bundle

Asked by Ed December 13, 2019

Answers

There are 6 batts in a bundle. Each is about 4 ft long. Two batts will fill one 16" x 8 ft bay. Six batts will fill a 48" wide by 8 feet tall area. That is 32 sq. ft. Don't know why Owens Corning doesn't give more info.

Can this be painted? I'm planning on putting this in the ceiling of my basement and leaving it open and exposed.

Asked by jsekel July 1, 2019

Hi jsekel, Thermafiber is difficult to paint because the paint may not permeate all of the fibers. Also the insulation and the paint will not hold up to movement or compression. Painting Thermafiber is not recommended. Thanks for your inquiry!

Is this product the formaldehyde free style of mineral wool that Owens Corning makes?

Yes. Those who have use this and Rockwool, like the latter better. HD used to carry in the stores, but it must be an order now. Too bad. It's a superior product.

Hello Susie, The Thermafiber UltraBatt is designed to be installed between studs. We do not have recommendations on placing in a window for noise reduction. Thank you for your inquiry!

This was very easy to cut using an insulation knife and installed between studs great. In my case, some of the studs spacing was not 16" centers so I had to cut the insulation into multiple pieces to get it to fit. I found you could use the studs as a guide when cutting. For example, I pushed the insulation against the left stud of a pocket and used the inner edge of the right stud as my line to cut along the insulation. This seemed to work pretty well and went quickly. This was for a bathroom and, except for one exterior wall, mainly for sound reduction and it has definitely worked on that front. I can barely hear the shower running when not in the bathroom. I also noticed that the shower wall tiles don't get nearly as cold as they used to prior to insulating the walls, so an added benefit there. One minor note is that the insulation has a distinct smell upon opening it. I didn't find it offensive, but I could certainly seeing it bothering someone else. The smell dissipates so it's not like it's a permanent concern. Overall, very happy with this purchase and would definitely use it again.

I was insulating a garage with 2x4 walls and a 2x8 ceiling. I doubled up the batts in the ceiling to achieve R30! This would not have been possible with the other insulation design for a 2x8 cavity. What I like best about working with this product is that it stays in place. Great friction fit. The only con is some of the batts were a bit fragile. There was definitely a difference in the resiliency and integrity of a few batts, but most were fine. A couple of batts had to be handled really carefully as they were sort of brittle and crumbling. But like I said most were fine. I love the fact the batts a designed to fit 2 vertically in a 92-5/8" stud cavity without any cutting. Installing the insulation in the ways went really easy. I used an electric carving knife for the cuts and this worked wonderfully. I will never use fiberglass pink insulation again after using this type of insulation. Easier to install, better R value and better fit.

I am a 67 year old female "rustic" DIYer. Was finally insulating an exterior concrete block wall in my laundry room. Put up a stud wall, air barrier, batt insulation (THIS PRODUCT), moisture barrier and drywall. This insulation made an immediate and HUGE temperature difference in my whole basement. Recommend without reservation. This product was easy to handle and apply. Fit into a standard stud wall as stated. However, when needed to resize, was easy to cut and fit. NON-ITCHING!!!!! Looked at other products, bought some. Found this product and returned the other stuff. Best decision. (Pictures are in reverse order. Oops.)

So far I’ve used this product to insulate my garage. The noise from the garage door opening has been noticeably dampened. I used roxul for my basement. There is very little difference between the products in my own opinion. Take care when pushing Owens into place to avoid fraying (roxul also did this). Others have used plywood for this, I managed with my hands just fine. I’m currently working on my homes exterior walls where standard fiberglass was installed, so I will update on its effect on my homes comfort. At half the price I wish I would have used in my basement. This is a quality product with great sound dampening and easy installation. I will continue to use.

bathroom project
Installed R-15 in bathroom wall around shower. Stiffness makes it easy to wedge in between the studs. Best way to cut is similar to a loaf of french bread. Less pressure , more sawing. I actually used a bread knife from kitchen. Handles differently than glass insulation.

Seeds Program Review
(What's this)
Definitely a 5 out of 5 for product performance, 4 out of 5 for ease of actual installation, but 2 out of 5 for handling due to composition. Although it's generally expected that insulation is unpleasant to work with, this was extremely harsh to handle as a skin and mucous membrane irritant. Especially in a sweltering, tight area. It also occasionally crumbles, releasing even more particulates into the air. Just being in the same room with the raw insulation causes me discomfort, so be sure to read the safety precautions on the packaging prior to handling, and definitely do not allow children or pets near it. Respirator masks (3M model 8210 or equiv. are recommended) are an absolute must and I personally recommend shop-vac-ing the area ASAP with an appropriate filter to avoid tracking. Once it's installed, obviously all that matters from there on is ongoing product performance. There is no paper-backing, so there is no stapling and the batts cut like butter with an inexpensive insulation knife. I was initially anxious to get to work and tried to use a drywall saw for the first couple, but it made a huge mess. Don't do that - lol. When cut with the proper blade, the batts install impressively rigid between beams and stay nicely in place. I got this insulation for finishing the exterior walls of my basement and to weatherize a small, awkward, exterior-backed/attic-type crawl space that has been a heating/cooling nightmare for two bedrooms. In the basement, the vents aren't completed yet and the ceilings aren't insulated, so there no way to reference a change. But as for the aforementioned crawl space, there was an almost immediate temperature difference in the adjoining bedrooms after installation, as well as a notable sound barrier between the rooms it separates. So I'm quite confident in how it will handle in the basement. Almost everything about this insulation is pretty amazing; going greener with 70%+ recycled material, safety benefits with temperature thresholds of 2000F+, water-resistance and sound-proofing. I've also read that the lifetime energy savings produced via the mineral wool will exceed any difference in manufacturing energy of the fiberglass currently used. Just cover yourself well during installation, then kick back and enjoy the lifetime of energy benefits.
