Questions & Answers

Installing insulation on existing insulation.

I bought an old house that currently has R-11 fiberglass insulation between the 2x8 rafters. I want to install R30 roll out fiberglass over the existing insulation. Can I lay the new insulation over the old insulation? Does there need to be a layer of insulation that covers the rafters?
Asked by: WGABill
It sounds like the existing insulation (R-11) is coming up short of the of the top edge of your 2x8 rafters / ceiling joists. I would run R-13 Un-faced on top of the R-11 between your ceiling joists to fill the Void, and then run the R-30 un-faced perpendicular to the rafters / ceiling Joists. That should give you a little more than R-50.

Can you use this insulation over knob and tube wiring? If not, can I lay it around the K

Asked by: Marilyn
you should be able to lay it over the knob and tube wiring as long as the wiring insulation is in good condition. laying insulation over the wiring will make it more difficult for an electrician to upgrade your house wiring in the future.

Ordered 12 rolls online and shipped product was ready to be picked up within a week. After cleaning the old blown-in insulation which was in good shape, made necessary plenum repairs using specialized aluminum tape from Home Depot. Cut the insulation into 4 foot sections and butted each one. I just used a regular box cutter. Had to change the blades a few times. But to get a true straight cut, I would have rather bought the specialized cutting knife used for cutting thick insulation from Home Depot. After I completed the installation, attic looked great. Huge difference in the air pressure coming out of the interior ducts by taping the plenum/attic ductwork/furnace where needed. And furnace doesn't have to work as hard to keep interior warm. Immediately noticed a overall temp control difference. With the Owens-Corning R-30, I was able to increase the overall insulation to recommended R-49 in my regional area. Thanks to Home Depot, I was able to get everything I needed for the job.

Owens should check process more. A few of the rolls had spots where globs of fiberglass had hardened on the insulations surface. Does not make you all itchy after using.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the affordable price and perfect for layering up your insulation! Good stuff, used this in an attic to achieve R60. Used owens corning R30 Kraft batts for first layer and than rolled this out over top. Some people commented it doesn't fluff up as nicely as others and I agree. It's very compressed when purchased, but all it takes is a bit of fluffing. Just grab the top layer and give it a few shakes than grab in the middle and repeat. You can even flip it upside down if needed. I used ten rolls in a small attic area and only one roll took a bit more work than the others to fluff up. The R30 batts practically spring to their fluffiness on their own however so not sure why this stuff is a bit more reluctant. However, it's good stuff, an affordable price, and handy size. No itch and nice touch having the R value printed on the insulation in large visible font. When you're layering up install it running perpendicular to the first layer and be sure to butt the edges together snuggly. Seems to be made for layering without the paper backing, nice touch Owens Corning! Would've been a pain pulling paper off each roll. After installation, heater runs noticeably shorter durations to warm up the room. :-)

It had settled to about a R-19 but still in good shape. Decided to use the Owens Corning R-30 roll insulation to run perpendicular right over the old once I leveled. Cut the rolls in 4 ft. sections and butted up against each other. It was easier working around the rafter supports and HVAC plenum. Went ahead and made the necessary ductwork repairs as well, sealing up any air leaks. Once completed, the attic looked great and immediately felt a much better temperature control. The furnace didn't seem to run as long and frequent. Overall, it was a good deal of work but well worth the effort. Ordered the rolls online through Home Depot and they had it ready for pickup within a few days.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a difference!!! I have a 1950's ranch and there is barely any insulation in the entire attic. I have put in 11 rolls so far over our old attached garage that we turned into a master bedroom and bathroom. I laid the first rolls in the joists and the second set across the joists making a R60. We live near Chicago and last year our bathroom dropped into the low 50's and so far this year it has been around 15 degrees warmer. I still have 3/4 of the attic left to insulate but I can't wait to see how the rest of the house will feel once we are done. This insulation is great to work with. Easy to cut and work with. It has touched my skin a few times, when I was installing the baffles for the eve vents I was in a very tight spot and my face was on the insulation. I was afraid I would be itching all night long but to my surprise there was no itching. Love this stuff!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hard job made easier with this product My husband and I purchased this insulation on sale and chose this brand due to its eco friendly properties and R-30 rating. We installed 50 rolls in our attic over a couple of weekends. This product performs as advertised and reviewed: No vocs, itch free, can tear it with your hands if you left your matt knife 20 feet behind you on a board in the attic. Absolutely the best choice we could have made for our project. If you have a low ceiling attic this is the way to go.....easier to roll and push with broom handles to edges than hunch and crouch with the blow-in type insulation which is what I helped my brother do in his attic.

After picking up the rolls and getting them up into the attic after a few days is when I started to open up the rolls and laying them out in four of the rolls after starting to roll them out it looked like they had been basically pulled apart or stretched to their limits to the point that there was not much of it left to lay down so I ended up cutting it at that point and tossing it out until I was back to a full thickness piece to say take a piece of toffee candy and pull on it that's the best description that I can come up with maybe your insulating machine got UPSET at a worker!!LOL I have used your product back in CT. and the only problem then was on the faced paper on the pieces was dyed a black color I contacted your company back then and they said it would not be harmful or take away from the quality so I put them up and no problem this on the other hand was a pain in the BOTTOM!! HMMM" see thru insulation" , something new ? Figure it out folks and get back to me THANKS!!

Minimal cutting and fussing with laying this in. Corning product allegiance goes back to my days as a kid helping my dad lay this in my childhood home. I could tell the insulation was having its intended effect the first night it was installed. A bit less stress on my HVAC and a bit less fuel consumed by my furnace.
