My home was built in 1986. Some portions of the ceiling are coated with a popcorn stucco coating that I wish to remove. Would it be wise to test for asbestos before wetting and scraping?
Asked by: butters
Make sure to read very carefully how to remove the stucco safely for the test. It needs to be removed in a certain way so as not to release dry asbestos into the air.

Is it safe for me to test for asbestos or should I hire a professional to do this.

It seems to me that if I don't know if something has asbestos I should leave it alone until I know.
Asked by: Mussafa
You can do it yourself.

How long does it take to get the results of the test?

Asked by: Av
I mailed my sample two weeks ago. I got an e-mail a week later, saying I would receive the results by email on Oct. 4, 2017. Two days later, I'm still waiting. Something tells me, based on others' experience that I'm going to have to contact them (which is supposedly very hard to do) and maybe get ready to wait two or three weeks longer.

This is more of a comment than a question. If what this 'kit' contains is just an addressed envelope to collect the sample in, couldn't I save $8 by using my own envelope and finding the address elsewhere? Collecting the sample consists of just placing a bit of the stuff to be tested in the envelope, sealing and then mailing it. Not exactly rocket science. No protective gear provided or needed in fact.
Asked by: LeadHead
Yes, very misleading. Most buy this thinking it includes testing costs (like many other testing kits) but it doesn't. You are absolutely correct, it is just a $7 envelope. ..and to a address the paranoia in the long rant below...No, being exposed to asbestos isn't going to make every living thing within 25 miles of the envelope suddenly burst into flames as the package passes through their town. In fact, almost all asbestos in houses is perfectly safe to remove yourself (with a few exceptions)

I sent the sample to ProLab 5 weeks ago, they deposited my check but no response. I talked to their customer service rep at 954-384-4446. They don't have any record of me. Their "accounting dept." can't find any record of my payment. I emailed a copy of my check showing their endorsement. Rep said they will send a reimbursement check. I called 1-1/2 weeks later and they say the "payment has been processed". What does that mean? "It means the payment has been processed!", they say. They act like a business that's about to go belly up. Next I'm going to hit HD up for the purchase price.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from This is not a 'test kit', this is a 'sample... This is not a 'test kit', this is a 'sample kit', so that's misleading. A test kit would be a kit allowing me to do the test myself. The lab fees were not mentioned or hinted at anywhere in the PR. The lab did the test, and notified me in a reasonable time.

The description promises results in five days; it took closer to two weeks to get results back. Result percentages are "visually estimated by volume". At least it's some peace of mind for $40.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good, but not necessarily official The kit contains a sample bag, plastic gloves, instructions, a detailed order form to help you identify the address and location of each test, and a prepaid mailer. Some tests require a $40 payment, others, e.g. floor tile, an $80 payment. The results came by email as a 2-page PDF email attachment 18 days after I mailed the samples. I could have ordered faster service at an additional cost. The cost of one test kit + lab work was about $87.72. Many asbestos abatement companies offer the services of a licensed asbestos inspector (as required by law in some locations) at a comparable cost. Did I just throw away some money? Maybe, but I know I have asbestos.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Warnning: if you are testing floor tile, you need to... Warnning: if you are testing floor tile, you need to send $80, not $40 as advertised on the package. Apparently they test both the tile and the adhesive, so they charge you for two tests. I had to pay the $80 even though there was no adhesive on my tile. I think it was peel n stick tile. But this is still a lot cheaper than paying someone to take the sample for you. It took about two weeks to get the results, but that is because i sent it right before Hurricane Irma, and the lab is near Miami, so I'm just thankful they were able to complete the test and get my results.
