I live in Michigan can I cover my plant for the winter?

Asked by Lil June 5, 2021
1
Answer

Hi Lil, Thank you for asking! The key to getting a butterfly bush through winter (especially in USDA zone 5 and 6) is well-drained soil, particularly when the temperatures are low but the ground is not frozen. If nighttime temperatures are predicted to fall below -20 degrees, you can protect the shrub by covering it with a light blanket and removing the blanket as soon as the temperature warms. Snow typically will not damage butterfly bushes. The bush blooms on new wood, so if one of the branches breaks, just make a clean cut where it breaks. Many people cut their butterfly bush back in autumn, as part of their fall clean up. But particularly in cold climates, this can leave your butterfly bush more susceptible to damage over winter. Do not prune until you see green buds on the stems. Make your cuts just above where big, healthy leaf buds have formed. It can take several weeks into spring for new growth to show up - be patient and resist the urge to cut them back too early! Because it is always possible for shrubs to experience winter damage in cold climates, it’s best to give them as long a time as possible to get established before they face the challenges of the cold, wet season. In USDA zones 5 and 6 especially, keep butterfly bush planting time to spring through mid-summer so the plants have ample opportunity to develop a good root system to sustain them through winter. I hope this information helps! If you have any additional questions, please always feel free to reach out to us at helpdesk@provenwinnersdirect.com or (734) 654-7485. Happy Gardening! Nikki

Hello Bob, Thank you for asking, we are happy to help. Proven Winners Pugster Blue is hardy in zones 5-9, and requires full sun. As long as it is getting at least 6 hours of sun a day, it will thrive in your zone 5! I hope this helps. If you have any questions please contact us at (734)654-7485 or helpdesk@provenwinnersdirect.com. Kind Regards, Allie

Should i cut it back it looks like its starting to die? I planted it in April and kept it watered and fertilized. Half the plant is dead.

Hello Chip, Thank you for reaching out to us. We are always here to help! Pugster Blue Butterfly bush is a deciduous shrub that will shed its leaves as it enters its dormant state. We recommend pruning in the spring after the new growth emerges. The warmer your climate, the more you should cut back your butterfly bush each spring. If you would like to provide us with a few detailed photos to helpdesk@provenwinnersdirect.com or reach out to us at 734-654-7485, we would be happy to assist you further. Kind regards, Tabatha

Pugster Blue Butterfly Bush, with Blue Flowers arrived wilted, unlike any other Home Depot, Proven Winners live plants that I've received. Scores of others have arrived healthy and ready to plant. I did notify Proven Winners and they instructed me to give it more time to adjust to the shipping and transplanting. After a week in the ground, it did perk up, but no flowers yet, after two weeks in the ground. The deer have not bothered it, which is a problem for me because of nearby woods. As all Proven Winners live plants, they come well packaged with complete planting and care instructions. See pics below.

The Proven Winners 1 gallon Pugster Blue Butterfly Bush (Buddleia) Live Shrub with Blue Flowers is a nice plant that will hopefully flower next year. (I got it in late July) The shrub did look dry and a bit uncared for when it arrived on my stoop, but we planted and watered and after about a week, it is doing really well. Looking forward to years of butterflies. I will say that the butterfly bushes in general really attract the butterflies, and this color should be really pretty next year. The shrub was easy to take out of the box it came in, we unwrapped from the bag, took out of the plastic pot, and planted immediately. Watered and we were done. Quick and easy planting and the bush is doing really well after a week in warm temperatures in the northeast.

What a great job Proven Winners did getting this plant to me. It had to travel from Michigan to Washington state in 90-100 degree weather and it showed up in great shapest a wee bit wilty, but nothing to complain about. The plant I received was about a foot tall. It is quite bushy. I don't believe this is the time of year that this plant has flowers so I am hoping to see some before the end of summer. This plant looks great considering what it had to travel through to get to me. Awesome!

The condition that they sent these plants was less than acceptable! They were tattered, withered and will take a lot of care to bring back to life!
