I wanted a globe shaped boxwood. Do I have to trim and train them to do it?

Sprinter boxwood will grow in a rounded shape, with small branches reaching in a radius and there will always be some longer than the others so yes essentially you will have to trim, but its not hard to do, 1-2x/year with hand trimmers should keep it tidy. watch out for boxwood blight though.

This will get taller than this quickly. To get a hedge fast plant more plants very close together. The sprinter is the fastest boxwood- I planted 12 1qts plants 2yrs ago and left alone and they are almost 2ft tall now. check out this site https://www.thespruce.com/small-evergreen-shrubs-a-colorful-list-2132754

I would like to grow a knee length hedge on my walkway to the front door 20’. What size do I buy and how many plants?

Asked by Eli June 10, 2020

Answers

Depends on how fast you want it finished. planting each on 3ft centers (1.5ft bw each) would be standard and take a few yrs to fill in. if you planted on 2ft centers it would fill in faster. w/3ft centers probably 7plants on each side. bigger plant= faster fillin but more $. 3gal x7plants maybe 1-2yrs to finish, suspect add 1yr to this each size smaller bc you will have to keep trimming to get the shape you want.

Do these plants do good in wet clay soils?

Asked by Michael May 18, 2020
1
Answer

Hello Michael, Thank you for reaching out to us. Yes, Our Sprinter Boxwoods can be grown in clay soil. Be sure to make sure your plants have a proper amount of drainage. We do not recommend amending clay soil, as it may increase the chances of root rot. However, adding mulch benefits your soil as well as your plants. I hope this helps! If you have any additional questions, please feel free to reach out to us at 734-654-7485 or helpdesk@provenwinnersdirect.com. Best Regards, Tabatha

How long does it take for the Sprinter Boxwood to mature to full size?

Asked by TD May 5, 2020

Answers

This depends on weather factors and plant health, care, location planted, soil etc. but I live in 6b and planted 1qt plants 2yrs ago and they are 2ft rounded balls now. when they arrived the above soil size of the plant was about 10" tall and maybe 7" wide.

Good quality but small
I just received an order of 9 gallon-sized Sprinter Boxwoods. They were healthy and well packed for the most part. One box was pretty badly smashed and another boxwood was tipped up in its compartment. But none were damaged. I'm pretty underwhelmed by the size of the plant relative to the container. I was expecting more based on examples I've seen of the Proven Winner Sprinter gallons in various YouTubers' videos. I knew I was taking a chance purchasing these unseen, but can't help but wonder if I would have saved a bunch of money and gotten something similar by ordering the quarts. They are just big enough that I'm not going to return them. Hopefully they are as fast growing as claimed!

Beautiful Boxwoods!!
These arrived beautifully packaged!! Well done Home Depot! I ordered 12 and all of the pots were perfectly moist upon arrival and carefully packed so as not to hurt the plants during transport. No broken stems or evidence of disease. All of the plants looked very happy and had new growth. Yes, they are small (the Proven Winner's typical 4-inch shrub container), but these are a fast growing, winter-hardy boxwoods, so I have faith in them! Definitely a fair price, given the quality of the plants.

These are way smaller than they look in the photo. For this price, I was expecting it to be much, much bigger. I hope this shrub grows fast. Lesson learned...don't buy plants online. It's more like 1 gal...not 3.

Bought four (4) of the Sprinter Boxwood shrubs. They were delivered in a single box April 23, expertly packed and in great shape. Re-planed them directly. Now two weeks later, they have settled and grown extensively. The pic is from when I planted it; it has grown at least 30% since! Never thought I'd buy online plants, but this have convinced me it works!
