keep in mind this will absorb water and swell if it gets wet. It's basically fine grained particleboard. Might want to consider foamed PVC molding boards instead. This stuff is unfortunately even more flexible but takes primer and paint reasonably well. PVC is normally hard to paint but the surfaces seem to be treated for good adhesion. The material under the smooth skin is finely cellular and will fill with filler primer like Duplicolor high build primer. For cars I'd design things to minimize visible cuts and simply use a plastic compatible spray paint in matte or flat finish. I find that mechanical fasteners along with CA adhesives work well. if you insist on using MDF consider using a textured black truck bed liner paint to finish. It will mask imperfections and is durable; it'll pretty much seal the MDF from water and the textured finish will better match a car interior. Might be a bit rough so experiment with sanding after cure (wait at least a week) followed by a matte topcoat spray. The effect will be closer to vinyl if you knock down the truck bed texture a bit. Make sure the matte topcoat is compatible with the truckbed spray- do a test. Sanding the truckbed spray will lose the deep color so the idea is to darken and even out the color. Instead of another spray paint, you might try black car wax instead. In any case test. It's a matter of what you consider to be good. Some people are happy with pretty crude work while others want it to be indistinguishable from original factory surfaces. The above suggestions assume a utility OEM surface intended to mask wear and dirt. Some cars are now using finer textured surfaces treated to resist soiling and improve durability so in that case you'll need to up your game in terms of surface quality and less texture.
