Quiet and powerful, difficult retrofit
The positioning of the electrical breakout of this unit makes it difficult to surface mount retrofit without modification. If you can manage to suspend it, it's a much easier job. I had very tight space for which suspension was the best option, and I rigged something up for that.

Wow, this fan is powerful! And super quiet too!! Definitely did the trick on our 15'x12' with 12' ceilings in the master bath. I was looking for the one of the biggest quietest fans. Original owners had a small fan. My husband installed without a problem. He did have to cut the drywall ceiling bigger to fit. We installed a timer for it to stay on 5, 15, 30, 60, etc.. minutes. (The timer is hooked up to the fan and shower light). Works great, no moisture left on mirror after long hot showers!!

Not for Retrofit
We bought two of these ceiling fans to help vent air out of our 3-car garage. The instructions for mounting within an existing ceiling (not a commercial drop-panel ceiling) were not clear and referred back to a new construction installation. I had to build the header frames around the fans, then mount those (with the fan unit) in the attic space between the ceiling joists. That would not have been bad, except the exhaust duct attachment ends up being too close to the header and required cutting out a semi-circle to allow for a duct adapter. In addition, the electrical junction box attached to the unit is made to be wired from below; however, that doesn't work with a retrofit installation. Also, the screws holding the electrical cover plate were machine tight and extremely difficult to remove with a hand screwdriver. If I had to do it over again - and for anyone else thinking of using these as a retrofit - I would still build the header frame around the fan housing, with the cut-out for the ducting, and I would open up the electric junction box before mounting the unit in the attic space.
HOWEVER, now that they are installed (wired serially into one switch), the fans are very, very quiet, considering they are 290 CFM capacity. We are very happy with the finished product and how they operate.

This fan could suck a golf ball through a garden...
This fan could suck a golf ball through a garden hose. My girlfriend might be the devil with how hot she likes the shower. I can brush my teeth at the sink and feel near zero humidity with this fan on. It’s quieter than the 70 cfm Broan I had before. Buy this fan. You will have to modify the connection box if you’re using this to replace an existing fan though. And it’s 6 inch duct so if you’re soffit venting get creative. I used a 12x3 rectangle register box to 6 inch round.
