Questions & Answers

How far can’ the 6” duct be run ?

Asked by: MikeLiebrand
Running the duct is more of a question for your installer. My 6" duct runs about 8 feet until it gets to a roof outlet T-pipe. The duct on the fan is several inches long, as shown in picture, and then connects with your existing duct. As you know the longer it runs, the more it can lose some suction. It's a powerful, quiet fan and I love it and would buy again. I do find upon reading threads online that exhaust fans are hard to install in existing fan replacement. Every thing is different, it seems. Lots of frustration, cutting drywall, squeezing this into that, etc., even if you buy the same size opening in the specs. Having said that, I will be getting another of these for my laundry room.

Asked by: Skip
No, obvious way to reduce the spped or noise - unless you ask an electrical engineer to add a voltage regulator - but not worth the effort. Overall the fan works great for a large bathroom. many times it left on all night and still runs fine - its a good fan!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The fan is very good. Very quiet and good... The fan is very good. Very quiet and good ventilation. The comments made by others about it being somewhat challenging to install are correct. Before buying, make sure there is a way to get to the location in the attic where it will be installed – you need to be able to get in the attic or you need to be able to cut a bigger hole in the ceiling to be able to install completely from below – that will entail sheet rock repair later. This is because the duct and electrical connection location makes the fan X/Y bigger than fan itself. Also, the dimensions of the fan is narrower than most ceiling joists. I had to add a short 2x4 to allow it to be attached on two sides to wood. While I was at it I added a cross beam ( of 2x4) for a third side of the fan (opposite the vent). It was not hard to install, if you are very handy at such projects. If you are not, please hire a professional.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from People kept saying they had issues putting this in place in an existing ceiling, not a new build.... People kept saying they had issues putting this in place in an existing ceiling, not a new build. It appears these people having issues were trying to install from inside the bathroom, not from the attic, they complained the unit would not fit through the hole. If you look at the directions and build the frame for the unit and install from the attic as shown, the install is easy and takes less than an hour. The fan is not as loud as the junk builder grade 80 cfm fan I removed, but not as whisper quite as people seem to believe, but I dont have an issue with it at all. Bottom line, take the hottest and longest shower you want with all the doors closed and your mirrors will be completely free of fog. Awesome product!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome with moisture but loud I bought this particular unit knowing that its capacity was a lot higher than what I supposedly needed for my small bathroom that measures 5'X8'. However I wanted a unit that would absorb all of the moisture that my old unit was not absorbing. My bathroom's walls outside the shower (tiled) would get all wet after even a quick shower. What a difference this unit makes! Absolutely no trace of moisture even during long hot showers!! I'm super impressed!! Nevertheless the unit is super loud, so I'm a bit disappointed on that respect because I was looking forward to reducing the amount of noise from my old unit which was also pretty loud. I did have to have someone install it and it took 2 people about 3 hours to install so it wasn't a simple job. Bottom line I'm very satisfied with my purchase since it's doing what I needed it to do.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not for Retrofit We bought two of these ceiling fans to help vent air out of our 3-car garage. The instructions for mounting within an existing ceiling (not a commercial drop-panel ceiling) were not clear and referred back to a new construction installation. I had to build the header frames around the fans, then mount those (with the fan unit) in the attic space between the ceiling joists. That would not have been bad, except the exhaust duct attachment ends up being too close to the header and required cutting out a semi-circle to allow for a duct adapter. In addition, the electrical junction box attached to the unit is made to be wired from below; however, that doesn't work with a retrofit installation. Also, the screws holding the electrical cover plate were machine tight and extremely difficult to remove with a hand screwdriver. If I had to do it over again - and for anyone else thinking of using these as a retrofit - I would still build the header frame around the fan housing, with the cut-out for the ducting, and I would open up the electric junction box before mounting the unit in the attic space. HOWEVER, now that they are installed (wired serially into one switch), the fans are very, very quiet, considering they are 290 CFM capacity. We are very happy with the finished product and how they operate.

Definitely did the trick on our 15'x12' with 12' ceilings in the master bath. I was looking for the one of the biggest quietest fans. Original owners had a small fan. My husband installed without a problem. He did have to cut the drywall ceiling bigger to fit. We installed a timer for it to stay on 5, 15, 30, 60, etc.. minutes. (The timer is hooked up to the fan and shower light). Works great, no moisture left on mirror after long hot showers!!

The fan works very well and is incredibly quiet for a 290 CFM fan. Panasonic should modify the design to make it easier to install in existing structures. To say the installation was difficult is an understatement. The problems start when you try and fit the fan through the hole you cut in your ceiling (the hole you cut using the Panasonic supplied template). It is not physically possible to get the fan's duct and electrical box through the hole. You must disassemble those parts, insert the fan, have a friend in the attic try to place the duct and electrical box back on, while you hold the fan, then try and reinstall the screws, etc. Crazy! In the end I've got the install finished and it works great. Just an extremely frustrating installation.
