This particular unit does not need a switch, I can run a direct line to it instead?

Asked by steve March 4, 2021

No, it does not need a wall switch if the unit you bought doesn't have a light in it. I have two of these (model FV-0511VQC1) in my house. They are wired so the unit is always "hot" (power always on) and I have no wall switches. The fan will only come on when it senses motion and/or senses too much humidity. There are two dials in this this model that you can change-- One dial that controls how long the fan stays on once it stops sensing motion, and one dial that sets how much humidity the fans needs to sense before it goes on or off.

can i vent this through the gable end of a house?

Asked by steve March 4, 2021

Answer

Yes. I ran mine out through the gable. About 15-20 feet of venting so I turned the cfm up to max (even though it's venting a small bathroom - it has a longer distance to vent). Works well.

How sensitive is the motion sensor? Will a cat turn it on?

Asked by CJ January 29, 2021

Answers

The motion sensor is pretty sensitive because it has a 90 degree field of view and can sense motion up to 10 feet away. We have cats and they sometimes set off the motion detector of the unit. Luckily the unit is so quiet, it does not startle or wake us during the night. We also have the motion dial inside the unit set to only have the fan run for about a minute or two before it shuts off, so no biggie.

Answer

If you have the model FV-0511VQC1, it has two dials in there-- One dial to shut off the fan after a certain time after it doesn't sense motion anymore and one dial to shut off the fan once a certain level of humidity is no longer reached. Technically, if you don't have the unit with a light on it, you can wire the fan so it's "hot" (the power is always on) and not have a wall switch at all. The fan should turn itself off if either of the two criteria I mentioned above take place.

Determine the size of your bathroom with this formula: Length x Width x Height x 0.13 = Minimum CFM rating. From Home Depot URL:---> https://www.homedepot.com/c/ab/best-bathroom-fans-for-your-home/9ba683603be9fa5395fab90ab995103

Will this work with a 3 speed fan control switch like a ceiling fan?

Asked by Sean July 18, 2019
1
Answer

These aren't made for dimmers or fan speed control switches. The fan in the unit is either running or off. There is a switch inside the unit that lets you choose one of three speeds for the air flow, but it must be switched manually and there is no other way to control that setting. Usually it's recommended you just choose a speed, see if it does the trick for you, and if not, try another speed.

what is the max run using a 4" or a 6" exhaust duct?

Asked by Parkway June 24, 2019

Answer

sorry I can't give exact answer but mine is 15ft and no issues. The fan is a 6in exhaust and I reduced to 4in since that was existing.

Can fan be turned on as needed if room smells?

Asked by Jc June 19, 2019

As @buyquality indicated in his post---> "Not exactly. If you were to turn the switch on without entering the room the fan will NOT come on because no motion will be detected."::... Doesn't make sense to install with a switch as the motion detection serves the purpose to come on and stay on for the designated time after the last person leaves. To include a switch would only complicates the issue. If you use a switch might as well not go with the motion sensor and make the switch a countdown timer switch. The Panasonic Specifications sheet states---> UL listed for tub/shower enclosure when GFCI protected. I would wire the Panasonic fan to comply with whatever GFCI protection that is accessible and in place with your house, as in the bathroom protected GFCI receptacle and forgo the switch. If you want a switch then that would be placed as GFCI protected and would be put somewhere not so convenient as it would be left on. Anecdotally why would you want to explain over and over to your guest to leave the fan switch on when without the switch it is simple, walk in fan comes on when you're done leave.....

Will the motion sensor turn it on and will it stay on while there is no humidity when you are using the toilet?

Asked by EA April 26, 2019

If it senses motion, the fan will stay on anywhere from .5 to 60 minutes depending on how you have the timer dial set in the unit itself. See pic below (sorry for the dust on it!)

I see that this needs to be installed on a switch. Should the switch control the light as well?

I would recommend a separate switch so it can be controlled independently of the lights.

We bought one for our other bathroom about a year ago on our electrician's recommendation, and it's made such a difference in keeping the humidity levels down. We loved the unit so much, we just bought another one a few weeks ago for our second bathroom. Cost a bit more than other ceiling fans, but worth every penny of it! PROS ===== 1. The unit can be wired to always be "hot" (always powered on) so no wall switch needed because it will only turn on when it senses motion and/or senses a certain level of humidity (user settable). 2. The unit its extremely quiet. We have it in the bathroom right next to our bedroom and when it occasionally turns on (either from motion or humidity level), it does not scare/wake us at all. CONS ===== None so far We highly recommend this ceiling fan! Please note that there are also some similar Panasonic models that don't have the humidity sensor feature, so just make sure you get the Panasonic model FV-0511VQC1 if you want this feature. There is also a model with a light in it, but we didn't need the light. The light adds about $100 to the cost of the unit, and I'm not sure if that model has the humidity sensor in it.

It sucks! And in a good way. So far so good. Installer didn't seem to have an issue with install. Whisper quiet. Short delay on start up but doesn't bug me. The (humidity and motion) sensors are very sensitive so I often keep the switch off, unless I want it on. One of these days I'll get back into the unit to change the settings a bit to see if I can leave the switch on. We set it to the highest cfm even though it's a small bathroom, largely because the air needs to travel through about 15-20 feet of venting before it reaches the outdoors. Glad to have the flexibility to chose the cfm. And lastly, it really sucks - all the steam out of my bathroom. I can return to long, hot showers and the mirrors are already clear when I hop out of the shower.

Great product from a great company. Put this fan in my bathroom about 6 yrs ago. Wired it in directly. Doesn't need a switch. just set the motion timer and humidity sensor and it takes care of everything. It does all the monitoring for you. I'm in the process of building a bathroom in the basement and installing the same fan.

First off - the installation for this is awesome, replacing my existing fan was really easy. I did have access above, through my attic, but even if I didn't, it would be a fairly easy install. This fan is REALLY quiet even at 110CFM; just that alone made this worth it. The humidity and motion sensor, and timer settings are awesome bonuses. Our bathroom used to fill with steam within minutes. Now there's zero steam on the mirror after a shower.

This fan does an excellent job and is extremely quiet! I am pleased with the outcome and glad that I chose this model. Initially, I had it set for 10 minutes but adjusted down to 5 minutes to auto-shutoff. I actually believe that 3 minutes would suffice. I definitely recommend this product!
